Pretty much this.  I've read that you should just go with and then, if there's still stubble, completely shave again, but I've got tough hair and th only way to ge tit smooth is to go against.  I shave with first, then in about ten different directions until it's smooth.

Yeah mine on my neck go in all directions. So I usually have to shave multiply ways. If I want a real close shave i also have to shave twice. But that usually shreds my face so much that it kind of defeats the purpose. I keep thinking I need to get electrolysis for my face just so I never have to shave again. I also don't like facial hair in general so a beard is out.

I started shaving with a Gillette double-edged safety razor because that's what men shaved with then. None of this namby-pamby multiple blade foofaraw

I had to trim a good 2 inches off last night because of a scissor mishap while shaping it.  I was trying to grow it long.  My wife has always wanted to braid my beard, but I can never get it long enough before I trim it really short again.

But it's ok.  With summer approaching (it was 80 yesterday, and 86 today) my face was hot.

The reason for ingrown hairs, cuts, razor burn, and 99% of the other problems associated with shaving has very little to do with how you attack the grain. The biggest error is a crappy razor. The next biggest is not loosening the cuticle of the beard hairs. The last is not protecting your skin with oil and a decent cream.

Technique and prep are everything. A good razor helps as well, but if you insist on a crappy disposable, make sure it's sharp. The fastest trip to messed up skin is to drag a dull razor across your dry face and iron hard beard just enough to half yank out the hair and then cut it.

If someone told them you could just shave a certain direction, that's a billion dollar hole in the economy.

Agreed. I also shave in the shower and never use shaving cream. Never have a problem with razor burn or bumps.

I use a straight razor and dry shave. It's really only for stubble, since I'm one of the unfortunates that can't grow an actual amount of facial hair beyond an pornstache and goatee.  Which is retarded, cause my father was able to grow a full farking beard when he was a teenager. I blame my mom and her inferior genetics.

I only shave once a week for going out on Saturday night, at work the rest of the week, no one cares so why should I? Budget twin blade throw away takes off all the heavy growth on 1st go round. Then reapply the lather and a better multi blade razor does the finishing work. I go against the grain in all areas on the 2nd pass pulling the skin one way and running the razor the proper direction. I have a nice little Wahl trimmer for my Flavor Saver. Trim that 'stache up good as well. Smoother than a teen girls butt if I do it right. Have found that I mess up more if I get in a hurry so take your time. Always have a styptic pencil for those times you screw up.

Hot shower to loosen up the hairs, and a Mach 3 to get rid of em is how I go about it. Another vote for down the face, up the neck. Though I throw in an 'across the chin line' for oft missed places.

With for the rough spots, i.e. upper lip and chin,  then across for good measure.

Incidentally... cheap disposables dont' work anywhere near as well as Mach 3s.. but a small pack of Mach 3 disposables will last me a year or more with no stropping or fancy tricks!

I dont shave my fave that often. Not too hairy. My balls and crack though... why aren't there any articles on that? Im just guessing but ill wager that even fewer dads taught jr how to do that.

I mostly just use an electric beard trimmer before I shower to get it down to stubble then finish it off with my Mach 3 while washing up.

Seriously to all those fools yanking out hairs painfully with a bic just invest in a goddamn beard/mustache trimmer it will change your life.

I shave up on neck, sideburns and jawline/cheeks. Down on upper lip and chin/lower lip/around mouth.

i go against the grain, to get it a bit closer... but my skin isn't all that sensitive, and my facial hair grows like... amazingly fast... I have a 5 oclock shadow a couple hours after I shave, I could have a full beard in a couple days.

I grow two completely different types of beard. I have a natural goatee that is dark, coarse, thick and tough. It will blunt a new 5-bladed cartridge in half a shave. The rest of my beard is finer, red, and curly so it has no discernible grain and is very prone to ingrown hairs. I have yet to find a solution that works well for both - the closest I've come is an electric with the round heads, but it doesn't shave close enough to really get rid of the 5 o'clock shadow on my chin even at 8 in the morning!

I haven't shaved using a mirror for probably a decade.

I go with and against - I basically just feel with my fingers where there's still stubble and that's just how I do it.

Gillette Contour Plus 2-blade with hot water and shaving soap applied with a shaving brush. First pass with, second pass against, then a final tidy up of the odd direction hairs on my neck. A splash of Aqua Velva Musk during the week, or Paco Rabanne classic for a night out and weekends.

/My lawn....you know the drill.

vibrating razors. Gillette mach 3 is a brand of then, i believe.

since i started using vibrating razors, i havent had to use shaving cream. just hot water. if i hit a patch of tough hair, i just go slow.

Shave after the shower, no shaving cream needed. Keep the blade hot and an older blade works just fine too.

Leave the fancy products to the womens.
