(The New York Times)   Look at those gun owners openly displaying their weapons. I mean, yeah; it's technically legal. It's their right and I don't care what they do behind closed doors but do they have to flaunt it in our faces? It's indecent   (opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com) divider line

Huh? What does a ruler have to do with--

Oh, wait. I get it. You're saying there's some sort of penis thing going on here. That's AMAZING. You, sir, have a most deadly rapier-like wit. It's a gift, my friend. Don't hide that light under a bushel.

The Times wouldn't even be asking this question if the open carry activists and TeaBaggers were Black. Scared White people would be enacting gun control faster than you can say "Governor of California Ronald Reagan."

FTFA: On the contemporary stage, those bearing guns in protest are most likely to be white, right-leaning, and rural....this represents a more or less direct reversal of the upheavals of the late '60s and '70s, when Republican politicians pursued new gun control legislation in response to armed protests by urban African-American leftists. Today, it is those most sheltered from actual state violence - from the day-to-day reality of police brutality - who also feel most threatened by the state, most free to threaten violence against hypothetical violations

I'm glad Mr. Blanchfield got to the crux of the issue. It just took 3/4 of the article to get there.

It is kind of strange to be walking around and randomly see guys wearing black and carrying guns. It's menacing.

Then to find out those people are mostly above the law, it's down right scarey.

No of course not, nobody ever dies, everyone is "nice" to each other. American gun culture and the large amount of guns available to anyone has nothing to do with the high violent crime rates at all. Like I said, nothing to see here citizens, pure coincidence.

If you're so distrustful of other human beings that you feel the need to have a weapon on you at all times, especially one designed to kill quickly, you are broken. Please remove yourself from the pool. Thank you.

You know this whole thing is kind of chicken and the egg.  Gun control supports wanted to get ride of people carrying guns and the people with the guns started carrying them everywhere in protest.

Of course the question being which group showed up first?  I think the former.

2014-05-06 10:28:40 PM
Can we PLEASE get huge groups of gay guys to show up (armed even!) and start making out with each other as messily as possible for these "events"? See if we can get these guys out of the closet finally.

Split that enormous "US" aggregate into inner-city and everywhere else, and you'll get stats that are basically third-world and Switzerland.

Open Carry is just a symptom of the disease.  The real issue is how guns are fetishized in this country.  What we need is a concentrated PR effort similar to the one against smoking that solidifies the public opinion against guns.  Once that happens we'll be able to enact reasonable firearm safety regulations.

2014-05-06 10:40:26 PM
Why anybody would want to open carry is beyond me - I've always been a keep it safe, keep it secret, keep it hidden kinda guy - but I don't get myself in a lather over every example of incomprehensible human behavior I witness.
If somebody has a gun, they have one. It's an advantage for me to know. Why they would want to give me that advantage is a puzzle to me, but I don't judge. If people are going to carry, let it be their preference.

Changing the culture is far more important than making laws - the laws wouldn't work if the culture doesn't change anyway.
But changing the culture is easy said - hard done.

That is, except for the fact that they always seem to exempt themselves from any of their own restrictions.  Funny how that works, seeing it's their idea of safety.  Why should they be afraid of that?

Yeah it's so weird that, despite having a mass shooting what feels like every couple of weeks, people feel unsafe by random people walking around with guns.  Probably should invest in "good guy with a gun" tshirts for them, and "bad guy with a fun" for all the other folks.
