More amusing: all the articles link back to the MSNBC article and offer no more details, save a pic of a sample page.

It looks like Italian script from that era, so it's probably shorthand in Italian. It's only in book 11, which is Odysseus in Hades AKA, "The Dandy in the Underworld."

if anyone has ever studied greek, you know what that marginalia is.

total and utter nonsense. all students of greek invent their own shorthand and lose a little of their sanity. i often wrote a shorthand in russian. and i don't even speak russian, but it made sense at the time.

And I'm sure there was some mouthbreathing Athenian who said it was just a rehash of THE ILLIAD.

Possibily. It was definitely a constant complaint of mine when I had to read the Aeneid for a class that was just the Odyssey with Italic names.
