When I was a kid, my grandparents used those small plastic eggs and fill them with candy...

For Portuguese folks, hard boiled eggs belong in the Easter Sweet Bread, not out in the back yard. : )

Most people accept that eggs are as inseparably tied to Easter as Christmas trees are to Christmas. PETA is not most people.

Easter eggs have nothing whatsoever to do with the Jesus's death or resurrection, and are mostly inspired by pre-Christian Germanic fertility goddesses who got knocked up by rabbits.  And Christmas trees, along with many other Christmas traditions right down to the date, were copy/pasted from Roman festival of Saturnalia.  Many things in both holidays were grafted onto Christianity as a way to convince converts that the new God was the same as the old god.

I had a live-in gf that was a vegetarian, which was fine. We both got along surprisingly well, though I did miss going to steak houses.  She was also a member of PETA when we started dated, but I was pretty relentless in showing her their stupidity. I can proudly say she canceled her membership within a few months.
