Fred Rogers is one of those truly wonderful human beings that is rightly revered by virtually everybody.  He was a truly gentle man who wanted above all for everyone to know that they were valuable and loved, and to teach others how to love people the way he did.  We could use a lot more like him.  I try to do my part, even if it's small and even if I don't always live up to it, because I know that Mr. Rogers would approve of the striving.

RIP Mr. Rogers.  You can ALWAYS be my neighbor.

The Slacktivist recently shared one of his favorite quotes from Fred Rogers. It's about how to deal with the existence of so much tragedy and so much awful behavior. He said that whenever you see a disaster, look for the helpers, the people moving towards the disaster to help those caught in it. They are  always there, and they are the reason we should have hope.

In honor of his memory, I'm pledging to always look for the helpers and to do my best to be one when the time comes.

He said that whenever you see a disaster, look for the helpers, the people moving towards the disaster to help those caught in it. They are  always there, and they are the reason we should have hope.

In honor of his memory, I'm pledging to always look for the helpers and to do my best to be one when the time comes.

So close - Phelps died on the 19th.  Rogers' birthday was the 20th.

I was going to make a snarky, asshattish comment about this, but then I figured in a thread commemorating his birthday I could at least pretend to be the person Mr Rogers knew I could be. So, I'll just link to Snopes and call it a day.

I remember growing up and watching his show, and being the dork that I am, I always tried to guess which color sweater he would wear that day. There was something about how he did the same thing each day that I found comforting. He is truly one of the good people that walked this Earth, a man who always tried to bring a smile to someone's face. There was a fascinating article that I read a couple of weeks ago about a reporter who followed him around everywhere for a couple of days, and how that experience changed him. Sadly, my Google-Fu is weak and I cannot remember where I read it; I think it was a large magazine/paper like the New Yorker or Rolling Stone. Ugh...

Two ministers named Fred who represented the extreme ends of the spectrum of the best and the worst of Christianity.
Both dead, but the memory Fred Rogers deserves the more prominent place in our thoughts.

This. I know because I share a birthday with him. I didn't find that out until recently. When I was young I only knew about William Hurt and Spike Lee sharing my birthday, both of whom I don't care much for. Then thanks to Wikipedia I found out about Carl Reiner, Mr Rogers, and John de Lancie sharing my birthday!

Fred Rogers obviously never lived in rural Arizona. Love is a 12 pack of cheap beer, a pickup, desert stars in a black sky, coyotes howling and a female that thinks your eyes are pretty. Oh and maybe some meth.

Like struggle huh. He got that right with one of my ex's. I gave up on that shiat. Girl was crazy. At some point you can give up on crazy and love if you aren't getting paid to care for it. They should teach that one to kids too.
