If I was 5 years younger and not married I'd have a huge crush on this girl.

I think someone from the Hunger Games said the same thing.

Risky, considering how territorial that fanbase can be and that this movie needs support from them to be a success, but she's right.

She'd better be careful; those 45 year-olds can be pretty biatchy.

I don't know what a Shailene Woodley is, but she's right.  Twilight was terrible.

That's cool and all, but 'Divergent' wasn't really any better of a book... Maybe a smidge better, but for YA fiction, both Hunger Games and Harry Potter were far better.

Maybe the movie will be OK, but I barely made it through the first Divergent book, and gave up about 60 pages into the second. That Veronica Roth chick writes "romance" as poorly as L Ron Hubbard writes, well, anything...

Everyone involved with the Twilight franchise weeps bitterly over their piles of money nightly.

She was freakishly good beyond her years in 'The Descendants'

My wife used to hate-watch Secret Life of an American Teenager, where Shailene Woodley really started getting noticed. And boy howdy, was that show terrible. To be fair, the entire cast was terrible, as was the writing, directing, editing--I'm pretty sure craft services was just a box of stale Cheerios to mach the awfulness of that show. Shailene Woodley actually stood out, though. Not as a beacon of light in the terribleness, but as the worst actress in a sea of terrible actors. I was floored when she was nominated for an Oscar, so I had to see The Descendants for myself. I didn't understand, she wasn't much better in that. When she was cut out of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, I had a pretty good idea as to why. I was completely flummoxed as to how this terrible actress was getting so much praise.

However, I will now support just about anything this chick does. Everybody in the business that has even a tangential connection to a YA property seems utterly terrified to say anything negative about Twilight, lest you piss off the fans and hurt your own chances. She said exactly what people needed to hear from someone in the YA movie realm. Good on her.

I tried to watch "The Secret Life....." because I went to elementary school with Molly Ringwald and was curious. Yes, it was awful. "Twilight" sucked too. Suffered through the first one, never felt the need to see the sequels.

My daughter just finished reading the Twilight book series. She hated it so much that she isn't on "Team Edward" or "Team Jacob"; she's on "Team Van Helsing".

"She falls in love with this guy and the second he leaves her, her life is over and she's going to kill herself! What message are we sending to young people?" said Woodley.

Of all the creepy, outdated, and downright toxic views on sexuality and relationships that Twilight espouses, she highlighted one of the more benign parts, really.

It's hard to imagine how they could be more stupid than liking Twilight in the first place.

Oh fark me this so bloody much. She's a horrible actress. She was so wooden. Even in the angsty eps she was angsty and wooden. I honestly don't know how she pulled that off. The entire show and entire cast blew chunks but she was the second worst of the entire cast. She skinny rich guy was the worst imo. I watch a lot of horrible tv but I just couldn't watch this show. The sycophants on ONTD have made me dislike her even more. All their stinking earth goddess posts about her. smh It just proves people will love anything if you tell them they should. #sheep

That being said I kind of respect her for calling out Twilight. It's the only reason I even remoely like Pattinson. I'd have respected him even more if he'd said what a crapfest the movies were before the franchise ended. I know you shouldn't bite the hand that feeds you but he was the star of the movie. Kind of hard to replace that without people not noticing. Stil don't care for either person but kind of sort of respect them because they both called out Twilight.

I thought the first book was actually pretty good.  I don't like the author's style, but I was interested enough in the premise to keep plugging along.  You're certainly right about the others.  I finished the second, albeit with a lot of several-day-long breaks.  The third was complete garbage and I got maybe half way through.

And I agree with the folks making comments about the possibilities of her reaction to Twilight being toxic towards promotion of Divergent.

I didn't read the article and was confused as to how you thought The Fault in Our Stars and Twilight shared the same fanbase since Nerdfighters aren't prone to being fond of TwiHards.

Then I realised this article must be about Divergent and your comment made much more sense.

Nope haven't seen either one. I  might see the new one that's coming out with her but only because I like sci fi. I have a feeling though that I'm not going to like it and it's going to be because of her acting. Seriously it's pretty horrific.

The trailer for divergent made it look just as dumb, like the nick jr version of equilibrium.

She's not wrong, just sayin

Or how Edward is a textbook example of an abusive boyfriend?

shortymac: Or how Edward is a textbook example of an abusive boyfriend?

Even this wouldn't be such a bad thing, if the relationship were not portrayed sympathetically. Bad things happen sometimes, and one of the things YA books are used for is to help people cope with bad situations. Depicting abusive or otherwise-toxic relationships in YA can be a very good and useful thing, if the books show the problems and ways resolving them.

But Twilight doesn't do that. Edward's abuse is romanticised, ultimately being treated as not merely normal but outright ideal. Jacob, for his part, is only slightly better. This is why I'm on Team That-Guy-Who-Almost-Ran-Bella-Over-In-Book-1.

Even if you are right.

The book was OK, but every time it got to the "And then he looked at me..." romance crap, it was bad. That started increasing near the end, so it reflected on the overall book. The second book pretty much hit the ground with the poorly written romance stuff... If she was better at writing the romance stuff, they would have been good books. I liked the premise of the series. It's why I'm still interested in the movie, it has an interesting story to tell...

Ugh, I can't believe that I'm actually defending New Moon but... Bella didn't try to kill herself deliberately. She was trying to get an adrenaline rush through dangerous experiences because it allows her to get visions of Edward. It's not deliberate in that she's buying an album of Norah Jones's saddest songs and a package of razor blades, then running a warm bath.  Of course that doesn't mean that Bella wasn't being stupid, just that she wasn't trying to commit suicide in the books.

But then, I'm only up to about the 2nd film. Thank goodness for RiffTrax.
