LiquidSky: Huh, that's timely ... my next door neighbour found a juvenile brown snake in her house this morning.   We're in Perth, WA, so probably a dugite.   She was wondering why the dog was acting a bit strange and wouldn't come into the bedroom.   She coaxed him in, and watched him dart along the left wall, clearly avoiding the right half of the room.    Turned around and there was the snake.   The lady in question a clichéd tough-as-nails old country housewife, so she killed it with a shovel.

Technically they're a protected species ($5k fine for killing one), and there'd be a bit an outcry if someone was hunting them out in the bush, but general feeling is that their rights end at your doorway ... if they're in your house, it's valid self-defence.

What's disturbing is that we're in the middle of suburbia.   To get from the closest bush area into her house, the snake had to go through a primary school and at least two other back yards.

Is it really the middle of suburbia if the bush is just a few buildings away?

is that one of those Australian understatements?

Can we please kill this stupid nope meme?  It is making all the backpackers and tourists skittish.

Ten years ago all you had to say was "I have a koala in my basement" and they would almost run down and put the chains on themselves. Now they start asking annoying questions about red backs, browns snakes and shiat.

crotchgrabber: If you're reading this, dear blogger, if you write a cuss word, we can read the cuss word, even if you use a "Y" instead of an "I". That's just annoying.

You realize you're writing this on a website with an active filter that changes the spelling of swears and has other effects too, right?

/Nubian, please.

Blue-ringed octopus. You're a little kid exploring a tidal pool at the beach when BAM! YOU'RE DEAD!

The blue-ringed octopus is 12 to 20 cm (5 to 8 in), but its venom is powerful enough to kill humans. No blue-ringed octopus antivenom is available yet, making it one of the deadliest reef inhabitants in the ocean. The octopus produces venom containing tetrodotoxin, histamine, tryptamine, octopamine, taurine, acetylcholine, and dopamine. The major neurotoxin component of the blue-ringed octopus is a venom that was originally known as maculotoxin but was later found to be identical to tetrodotoxin, a neurotoxin also found in pufferfish and some poison dart frogs that is 1200 times more toxic than cyanide. Tetrodotoxin blocks sodium channels, causing motor paralysis and respiratory arrest within minutes of exposure, leading to cardiac arrest due to a lack of oxygen. The toxin is produced by bacteria in the salivary glands of the octopus. Their venom can result in nausea, respiratory arrest, heart failure, severe and sometimes total paralysis and blindness and can lead to death within minutes if not treated. Death is usually from suffocation due to lack of oxygen to the brain.

You're dead kid, you're dead.

That had the potential for a good read, but the guy's writing style is very off-putting. Couldn't even finish reading it because of that.

And I wanted to kick him in the crotch for each & every misuse of "it's" (it is).

I got through maybe a paragraph before I had to leave the page.  Not because of the animals, but because of the nigh on illiterate babble the author spewed all over the page.  Whoever that person is needs to haul their ass back to grammar school and re-take English, because I don't think they know it very well.
