genner: Doctor's  still use stethoscopes?

[ image 600x428]

Pocket Ultrasound from GE: Not particularly useful for listening to breath sounds, bowel sounds, taking a blood pressure, or many other common things a stethoscope is used for on a daily basis. (Great for difficult IVs though). But it looks neat and costs about ten grand, while a Littmann Cardiology III (the one I use) costs about 170 bucks.

They typically disinfect them by storing them in the freezer.

From TFA:  Stethoscopes should be disinfected after each use because they pick up bacteria from a patient's skin, a study has found (emphasis mine)

That's either a reading comprehension fail or a really poorly-written headline.

When we were in the hospital for 19 days with our two month old, each patient had their own stethoscope to prevent any cross contamination. I can't say that I notice the doctors in the pediatrician's office wiping down their scopes consistently, although I have seen it at least a few times. I'll have to look more closely from now on.

If doctors need to be lectured on how there is bacteria on peoples skin, I think they're skipping a few chapters in the book at med school.
