shower_in_my_socks: American Hustle was the most fun I had at the movies all year. Just a master filmmaker enjoying every effing scene with total brilliance.

What the? Not that it was bad, but I can't even imagine someone having this reaction to American Hustle unless maybe you've never seen a throwback '70s movie before and all the costumes made you giggle with glee. I can only remember a couple scenes that warrant a laugh out loud moment. Nor was it very tense and dramatic.

Watched "Buyers Club" last night, and had the strangest feeling that I was waking up in a hospital this morning.

skinink: One of us has bad taste in movies. I thought both Gravity and AH were pretty good movies.

Gravity is an amazing film...to watch.  I actually rewatched it today to see how it plays at home.  Once again, incredible film...to watch, but I hated SB's character and Clooney has fallen into a Jack role of every role is just him being Clooney.  This case it was Clooney in space.  The bigger problem I had with Gravity is that for a film that goes to such lengths to be realistic (sounds, lack thereof, etc) it asks you to ignore some basic truths.  If it was an average film, these logistical leaps in space logic (how things work, where things are located, etc.) would not be an issue, but they went to such great lengths to make the movie realistic to ignore pretty well known facts for the sake of plot takes away from the film.  If you want the main character to die and they're supposed to be a good person the director didn't evoke the right emotions.

skinink: American Hustle had a good plot and strong performances. I'm not saying it's a Criterion film but it's pretty good.

The one thing it didn't have is a good editor.  I damn near fell asleep in the film, which is why I said it needed to be cut by 20-30 minutes.  There might be a great film in there, but it wasn't (IMHO) what ended up as the final cut.

I'll give you two films that I thought were far better, All is Lost and Captain Phillips.  Captain Phillips suffers from the fact that they took liberties with what actually happened, but the scene at the end shows that Hanks has more acting chops than probably anyone of his generation.  All is Lost is the better of the two and is a great film.  It shares common ideas/elements with Gravity, but the character is likeable (even though there are probably 5 lines of dialogue in the entire film).  All is Lost is the best picture I saw last year.

devilEther: Sybarite: Just watched Dallas Buyers Club last night. While I am loathe to admit it, everyone actor nominated who isn't Matthew McConaughey needs to practice their "Happy for you" face.

It made me nervous when he did that. But McConaughey was fantastic in that small part.

Copied from eonline: "That aired on CCN on Feb. 11...Voting doesn't begin until Feb. 14...Nameplates are made for every nominee...So of course Leo has one already engraved."
