I never said that they weren't. I said, it costs less in carbon emissions and money to ship produce around the world than it does to preserve it for a year.  We don't need to stop eating produce just because it's not local and it's a really bad idea to to this.  It directly impacts food security.  Currently we have access to food gown all over the world and if we have crop failures we buy food from elsewhere.  If everyone bought locally effectively dismantling international food distribution then crop failures mean food shortages.

Eat local is just fine for individuals but as a movement it's simply another way for pampered westerners to fark up the world with flashy slogans and poorly thought out ideas.  The same as when well fed white trust fund kids protest GMO crops in sub Saharan Africa.

Don't eat like its the 1700s, be smart, think critically, and you will be able to enjoy all kinds of foods from around the world year round! And hey, if pickling and growing your own food is your hobby, then by all means go for it, but don't get all high and mighty about your little garden or locally produce food. It's easy to say that when you live in a first world nation and not Uganda.

That's the problem with claiming people need to eat seasonally and locally.

Here, that leaves you eating gourds, herbs, and mushrooms.  It's a dumb proposition.

I pickle peppers and preserve vegetables myself.  It's not hard.  I also do research into what canned and preserved foods I buy before I purchase.  Amazingly, it's not hard to do that either.

Cold_Sassy: And the person who said good corn is available in the winter in the frozen foods aisle - WTF?!?

Flash freezing preserves the cell membranes of foods like corn.  It's perfectly fine.  How do you not know this?  Do you just throw out your food or have some remarkable system for buying precisely what you need every time?  It would be exhausting buying in small enough increments that food never needed to be preserved.

Pwnzor: People really need to learn to eat locally and seasonally.  Human beings don't need access to every single fruit and vegetable all the time.  In the Northeast US, there are no good tomatoes or peaches in the winter. There are no good pears or corn to eat in the Spring.  Apples in the summer are horrible.  Eat what's locally in season and it will always be fresh and delicious and you might actually get more satisfaction because you will learn to look forward to the next season's harvest.

It's not necessary to center your entire diet on what is locally available and in-season. In fact, it's a little silly to say that's what everyone needs considering how that would limit some areas because certain foods don't grow well there.  If it weren't for the need and process of canning and preserving, we wouldn't have jellies and jams and jars of tomato sauce and a whole catalog of recipes built around making use of preserved vegetables.

Don't get me wrong, nothing is better than fresh local produce, but you can't realistically expect that to be the sum total of your diet.
