The magnetosphere isn't collapsing, it's loosing integrity to a small degree as it moved towards a probable pole shift. Magnetic iron deposits show that this is a somewhat regular occurrence and that the magnetic field weakens before such an occurrence.

phrawgh: Enjoy your gay marriage and forced abortions of white Christian babies under Obamascare. It will all be over soon but many of you will suffer forever.

Revelation 6:14 - "Then the sky receded as a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved out of its place."

The cosmic disturbances and the great earthquake are clearly tied together. John tells us "every mountain and island was moved out of its place" in the great earthquake. Isaiah indicates this great earthquake that shakes the foundations of the earth has to do with "open windows." During this earth shaking event, people will hear a fearful "noise":

Isaiah 24:1, 18-20 - Behold, the LORD makes the earth empty and makes it waste, Distorts its surface And scatters abroad its inhabitants.... And it shall be That he who flees from the noise of the fear Shall fall into the pit, And he who comes up from the midst of the pit Shall be caught in the snare; For the windows from on high are open, And the foundations of the earth are shaken. The earth is violently broken, The earth is split open, The earth is shaken exceedingly. The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, And shall totter like a hut; Its transgression shall be heavy upon it, And it will fall, and not rise again.

Interestingly, fluctuations in the earth's magnetic field have been observed before earthquakes occur

The following is a hypothesis on what might occur in a magnetic pole reverse:
In popular literature, many conjectures have been suggested involving very rapid polar shift. A slow shift in the poles would display the most minor alterations and no destruction. A more dramatic view assumes more rapid changes, with dramatic alterations of geography and localized areas of destruction due to earthquakes and tsunamis.

I guess it's a slow news day over at Mail Online, since the future pole flip has been known about for quite a few decades now, there wasn't much reason to panic twenty years ago, and there really isn't much to panic about now, either.

There again, judging by the nekkid buttock pics on the sidebar of the TFA, it's pretty much ALWAYS a slow news day over there.

*facepalm* Scientific American had the polar shift as a cover article back in 2004, and as it's already been mentioned, iron deposits show that this is a typical (though infrequent) event that takes hundreds of years to complete 1 shift cycle.   The Taoist in me perceives this as the magnetic poles are always in the process of shifting, and have never been solely stable.

Actually, they're not making this up.  Well, I don't know if they're exaggerating the potential consequences or not (or the idea that planetary warming is a result of magnetic changes rater than CO2, which I find hard to believe), but the Earth's magnetic poles do flip from time to time, and it looks like we're about to undergo that process soon (geologically speaking).   In fact, it happens, on average, every 450,000 years.  This is from wiki, showing the gradual migration of the north pole:

Wandering poles are thought to precede a flip in the magnetic field.  But we don't really know, since humans weren't really around the last time this happened.  On the other hand, the measured decrease in the magnetic field strength may be the result of a temporary geomagnetic excursion, in which case the poles will go back to their usual places, and the magnetic field will return to full strength.

I refuse to live in a godless world where the north pole is now in the south. If such an event occurs I regret to announce I will move out of New York, and will likely move to Texas or Florida where the poles are in their natural state.

Slypork: It's a conspiracy created by the compass industry that was losing business. Now everyone will have to buy new compassess since the old ones will point the wrong way.

It's the map companies like the Rand McNally maps (i.e. Rand=Rand Corporation=Paul Rand which sounds like Ron Paul only flipped).  Get a map that shows True North from Magnetic North and it changes EVERY SINGLE YEAR.  It's a device used by evil corporations to enhance income inequality experienced by poor people living on islands affected by sea level rise and extreme weather trying to escape through illegal immigration.  By making the maps change every year,  Tea Bagger corporations are profiting from people traveling to El Norte  by constantly changing where El Norte is.  It's a classic example of how rich people become rich from poor people.  It's a known fact that if enough poor people are placed next somebody not poor, he will become rich.  It's magnetism.

All the geological evidence we have indicates that while the field becomes more chaotic, the magnetopause still extends out to 3 Earth radii and will continue to protect us. This has happened many,  many times before. There is no evidence that links reversals to any sort of cataclysm on Earth. If there  were a sudden influx of radiation, we'd expect to see mass extinctions- and we don't.

The process also takes 1,000-10,000 years, so... what I'm trying to say here is that this is a non-event.

As the magnetic shield weakens, the spectacle of an aurora would be visible every night all over the Earth

On the upside, that would be pretty awesome.

neuroflare: Sounds like sensationalist bullshiat

This article is sensationalist, but It's not bullshiat that the magnetic field is weakening/changing. We have extremely solid evidence that the magnetic poles have flipped thousands of times during the earths life. And when they flip there is a 'small' period of little or no protection from our magnetic field.

But it's also not something we should worry about too much other than how it will affect power grids and such. Because otherwise we have absolute zero control over it and are not really sure what even causes it.

That picture in TFA is awesome! The Earth is right up in the Sun's face, and the Sun is shooting a solar flare directly back at it, like they're in a climactic Voldemort-Potter stand-off. You even see the magnetic shield burning white/yellow hot, like it's a magical shield protecting a D&D PC from some dragon's flaming breath. Seriously, it's like a movie poster -- Earth Versus Sun: The Magnetapocalypse.

I predict that sooner or later the GW deniers will notice this fact and start pointing out that the earth was warming during the same period that the field was weakening!
