A message on Facebook said he intended to continue his trip from Europe on into Asia and the rest of the world.

It takes a special type of personality to go on one of these global bike trips -- for whatever freaking reason -- through war zones and just accept the fact that folks get their shiat blown away so you can make some kind of statement or record.

I still can't fathom the personality it takes for civilians from the USA to vacation in a war torn nation, knowing that the chances are very high that (A) civilians may get killed around them as insurgents try and knock off the Americans and (B) they may as well have targets on their backs.

Such folks usually gush about how they like the people, the food, the culture while they duck bullets, have to get security forces to escort them about and, on at least one occasion, had the car they were in riddled with bullets.

Yeah. Makes me want to run right over to some dirt nation, squabbling over religious stuff, blowing up as many civilians as they can with suicide bombs and more than happy to kidnap or gut a tourist, especially one from the USA. Just because I like the ambiance.

I think such folks figure their passports give them actual immunity from being shot to pieces.

And never let a little thing like a bloody civil war along with genocide get in the way of your walking or biking trip across the globe because your statement is more important than the little things like folks wantonly slaughtering each other. Tweet and blog about it as you go.

This is the most absurd situation I've heard. Riding a damned bike around the world, riding into some of the most dangerous territory on earth, having a 11 guards snipered off and then continuing like it's no thing after mentioning that you fell off your bike and were slightly injured? What the bloody hell is this?

If the guards had went alone, they would still have been killed.

I'm guessing this is why they even attempted this. They can't admit that their country is so farked up that there's parts of it where 12 armed guards can't enter without half of them being killed.

Ehhhhh bout the same as Mexico City.  For the rest of Mexico a western Tourist is probably actually safer from all reports.  You just have to know the new rules and know what to do when the cartels are making their sweeps.  The cartels by and large arnt looking for anglo tourist minding their own business, they will hold you at gun point and rifle through all your crap, ignore your money and as long as your not transporting guns or drugs or show any sign of being a rival gang member let you go on your merry way.  No, really.  I  mean yea it sucks but they are not killing tourist whole sale down there every chance they get, people are just getting in the way of their little civil war is all.

Mexico City however?  Yea fark that place, be safer in Beirut.  Showing up there white is like wearing a "Please kidnap me" sign.

My neighbores went to pakistan every few months to visit family for years until yea before last.  When they got back from that trip they said "never again",  too farking crazy, too political.  Everybody they knew were telling them that since they had American connections to stay the fark away or they might get killed.  "Pakistan will be Afghanistan in a few decades". Wonder how India will like that.

As for the article, the guy is either CIA or an idiot.
I have no sympathy for either, one understood the risks and the other wouldn't understand if you wrote it with neon colors.


Also, they say truth is weirder than fiction, but this sounds like maximum trolling.
All that is missing is the guy scraping cars with his handle bars and not caring.

Also, nothing happened to him, his guards died protecting him. While he went bicycling, not transporting vital medical supplies or raising money for a charity, or anything but riding his bike. The only difference between his bicycling hobby and someone playing WoW obsessively is no one dies protecting the WoW player.

If she travelled to Pakistan for fun and got her guards killed protecting her from danger in a lawless region, I might find it in my heart to blame her a little. Not in civilized lands, though.

I'm sure there are lots of gorgeous locations in Asia and the subcontinent where he wouldn't need to spend the night at the police station and need a dozen armed guards to make sure his trip didn't end in sudden death. It doesn't sound like he's exactly strapped for time. I'll go with him being a selfish, shortsighted ass, especially since he seems to be carrying on with the trip.

Incidentally, it shows just how thorough my knowledge of Pakistan is that my major association with Quetta is Kipling's poem "The Story of Uriah." Looks like the place hasn't gotten any healthier to be in over the last century and a half.
