When it comes to obsessing over very obscure acts and subgenres, EDM fans and hipsters have nothing on metalheads

dewright_ca: ChubbyTiger: whizbangthedirtfarmer: Boudyro: I must be getting old. Because I really want to like modern metal. But it seems like more often than not I listen to a song, and I'm digging the riff, I'm feeling the beat, my head starts to bang, and then some asshole comes along and tries to deep throat the mic while someone shoves a telephone pole up his ass.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat.  I grew up listening to Emperor, Immortal, Paradise Lost, Samael, My Dying Bride, etc., etc.  I just can't seem to find new metal nowadays that doesn't seem to be pale imitations, or at least can put together a complete or near-complete album.  Every once in a while, I'll come across a good single, but it's rare that I find a decent album, and lord knows, I've tried: I've picked a lot of FARK recommendations: Uncle Acid, Orange Goblin, Carach Angren, and so on, but none of them seem to make me want to keep listening beyond a few tracks.  It's usually where they go with blast beats for, well, almost the entire song, or the lead singer starts to, apparently, have a heart attack.

Do you like female vocalists? Nightwish, Delain, and Within Temptation are all good. I prefer power and symphonic metal, partially because I hate the cookie monster thing. Rhapsody, Lacuna Coil, Tyr, etc. I've also really started to love Sabaton, lately. I suppose they're power metal.

/not the heaviest stuff in the world, but good

On the female side make sure you include Lacuna Coil, but you have a great start there...

I would also recommend Diablo Swing Orchestra if you like either operatic female vocalists. Their 2012 album 'Pandora's Piñata' is awesome.

i looked at some other lists to remember what came out this year and managed to eke out a top five. in no order.

Fister - Gemini sludgy midwest death doom with violin, cello, piano elements. concept album based on the movie 'Dead Ringers.'
Kaosophia - The Origins of Extinction swedish-style orthodox black metal from Ukraine. great frosty/dissonant dual guitar interplay. for fans of Watain and Dissection.
Cultes Des Ghouls - Henbane like a mix of eastern bloc proto-black metal and bestial black/death war metal. Superb atmosphere and tones.
Bölzer - Aura Dismember meets DsO kind of vibe on this one. super riffy fun stuff.
Blut Aus Nord - What Once Was...Liber III the best thing Vindsval has done since 'Memoria Vetusta II, and way better than anything in the 777 trilogy.
