ERNesbitt: brigid_fitch: MikeVx: I just finished changing to the least obnoxious option that I could manage under the new system that allowed me to use a hospital that I can get to in under an hour.

I have no coverage on anything until my out of pocket passes five grand.

My premium is over double what it was.

If this is your idea of an improvement, you would need to get much better to come up to the level of insanity.

Just finished open enrollment for 2014.  I get the same coverage at $20/month LESS than I did in 2013.  Your anecdotal evidence is invalid.

I'm guessing you must make under $40K/yr. My family coverage went up by $120/mo for the exact same coverage had for 2013 with one minor difference... all of my deductibles doubled. The people getting screwed are not the wealthy, it's the families pulling in $40-$75K/yr (roughly 300-400% of the poverty level depending on household size). Average household income in the US is around $65K/yr and statistically, 68% of the total population fall within one standard deviation from the mean (about $22K). So, roughly 2/3 of the total population falls between $43-$87K per household. These are the people who are now required by law to purchase something they probably had before at a higher price. Your anecdotal evidence is not consistent with the majority.

Ask yourself a simple question: Where is the money going? Hospitals aren't seeing it, they're seeing medicare (responsible for about 85% of a hospital's total income) reduce payments across the board. 66% of the population isn't seeing it... we're paying more for less service. What about the insurance companies? They have no real incentive to offer lower prices because the demand has been manufactured instead of driven by a need or open market. Do you think rates will go down out of the kindness of their hearts?

And now you know why the health insurance companies support the ACA.

A bit late to the party, but I couldn't help contributing.
