I've wondered this for years. The birds on the coast of the arctic ocean freak me out. Why don't their little legs just fall off?

We had a chicken who got caught out on a cold night and lost a toe to frostbite. Her name was Boo Boo. She never got caught out again, I tell you!

I have birds frequenting my birdbath when it's 50 degrees (living next to the Pacific Ocean, it seldom gets colder than that). I've always wondered why they don't put it off until it's warmer. Feathers or not, seems like it would be mighty uncomfortable, but they don't seem to mind.

How dull.  I'm sure tomorrow Lohan will get drunk and hit a photographer.

Well, perhaps the real answer (in addition to the answers in the article) is that birds do get frostbite often enough, you just never see them because they likely don't tend live long afterwards.

/had a pigeon that would hang out on the deck in Albany, only had one leg

Likely attributable to poor hygiene along with poor heating. I haven't seen any stumpy sparrows.

During winter I put very hot water in my bird bath at the same time every day. The birds quickly learn when the water is at a suitable temp for a bath.
