There are some modern animals that, instead of pooping where they feel like it, establish communal areas. These areas, and their scents, are a way for the herd to learn and remember who is a member of the herd, and establish territory.

So, if these ancient animals pooped in communal areas like this, it hints at similar modern behaviors.
