Taking a 16' jon boat out to sea doesn't seem particularly stupid to you?

I've done it exactly once (with 25 HP outboard motor) in 6-7 foot seas and it was scary as hell.

Only reason the other guy and I did it was to get another boat that had busted a fuel line a ways off shore and were drifting away from the island with 4 people on board and with nothing but open ocean for 1500 miles in the direction

Reminds me of my own recovery operation the time I was launching my 17' Larson on the 80 acre lake near my house.

After I loosened the winch strap and slid the boat partially down the trailer, the strap snapped on tightening up again and off my boat went with no one on board.

I had to wade out up past my waist to recover her and being early in the season, let  me tell you... it was pretty cold.
