Mister Pleco: I had a Chinese, born and bred, girlfriend born in the late 60's. She has two younger sisters. I asked how the government allowed that to happen to which she replied, "Oh, that only applies to peasants!"/all people are created equal - some are more equal than others.//the more you know.
Lucky LaRue: I think China didn't have a choice on the one-child policy. Too many boys and not enough girls to go around is a recipe for disaster.
Cold_Sassy: wichitaleaf: TheShavingofOccam123: So do they need the dudes for invading India again? Vietnam again? Russia again? When a country filled with 1.4 billion people looks around and says "we need the dudes", you have to ask yourself why.Modern all-out, toe-to-toe warfare has enormous casualty rates. We're not talking Seal Team Six combat. We're talking nuclear warfare fought against billions of civilians. It is no secret that the military and other VIP's in scarily important places within the Chinese government want to and are planning an attack on the good ol' USA.I have heard this also, and it wouldn't surprise me in the least.
miss diminutive: Excellent. The future will need more space miners.
lockers: This will probably have zero impact on the actual population growth in china. Hell, Taiwan practically pays for the kid and it hasn't made a dent on their population decline.
Endive Wombat: Lucky LaRue: I think China didn't have a choice on the one-child policy. Too many boys and not enough girls to go around is a recipe for disaster.I was listening to NPR a while back...they were discussing the fact that there is going to be a major deficit in a couple of areas. One being breeding, the second being elder care...they mentioned something about the fact that there are more old people than young, and China is going to have a reallllyyy big problem with there not being enough able bodied people to take care of the elderly in the coming years. This problem has been directly attributed to the misguided theory of population control.
Sybarite: Before everyone goes all Henny Penny about global population, population growth rates have been steadily declining since their peak in the late 1960s. It took 40 years for the population to double from 3 billion in 1959 to 6 billion in 1999, and it is projected to grow 50% in the 43 years from 1999 to 2042. Current UN projections show population stabilizing and possibly even declining after the middle of the 21st century.[wwws2.eea.europa.eu image 768x681]
