fusillade762: After a prolonged campaign that reached as high as the White House, the provincial government banned mining and drilling in the Flathead River basinDamn copycats.
a particular individual: I wonder what their motivation could be...
Dhusk: Giant Canadian mining corporation.Ah, that explains it.
LordOfThePings: This is mine, this is mine, all of this is mine.Except that bit. I don't want that bit.
100 Watt Walrus: Not sure how it's relevant, but I'm always up for a good "Red Dwarf" reference.
max_pooper: Good. Usually they just torture the timbers and strip all the land and then write it all down as the progress of man.
Thingster: max_pooper: Good. Usually they just torture the timbers and strip all the land and then write it all down as the progress of man. That's in Kentucky, this is Canada.
doglover: Nobody is entirely evil.Hitler was a vegetarian and very kind to animals. Humans, not so much.
Monoxide: i wonder why teck gets to buy land at $100 an acre :( i'm stuck paying orders of magnitude more than that!
GreenSun: They were inspired by vagina baby cake.
New Age Redneck: I am betting there will be some kind of carbon credit scheme coming from this......it's like the Darkwoods conservancy nearby here which is an area that has been timber-pigged valley to alpine that they are selling carbon credits for.....[imageshack.com image 850x637] I live 5 miles and 2000' above the Teck metallurgical operations in Trail BC, they are pretty decent with their pollution control and their e-waste recycling is admirable....that said they are still driven by money and profits first and foremost....so as far as conservation goes.....
max_pooper: ... torture the timbers and strip all the land and then write it all down as the progress of man.
Monkeyfark Ridiculous: max_pooper: ... torture the timbers and strip all the land and then write it all down as the progress of man.I read that to the tune of "Godzilla" by Blue Öyster Cult.
SomeoneDumb: Maybe they're buying it to preserve it now, but can't that sort of thing change pretty quickly once they own it? A new CEO, new board, new discoveries can easily change a company's mind or plans.I guess it's good for now. I'm just not so sure about long term.
100 Watt Walrus: They'll just wait a couple decades until the glaciers are gone and nobody wants anything to do with the gray, boulder-littered valleys left behind, and they'll have free reign./didn't put a lot of thought into that one, just popped into my cynical head
