Also, the Allied ASW doctrine at that time was "hunt to exhaustion".  Submarines back then had limited air and battery power, and the idea was to persist until you either destroyed the contact and had good evidence thereof, or until they surfaced.

I'll give Hubbard a pass on this one.

Should have finished this thought:  If he had a sonar contact, as TFA says, then it wasn't due to the deposit, and in fact subchasers back then didn't have MADs*, so whether or not there was a magnetic deposit there would have been irrelevant to him.


*MADs have to be apart from any magnetic fields in order to be useful, so they often end up as "stingers" on the back of aircraft like the P3 Orion.

What you don't know is his executive officer tried to tell him on more then one occasion that he was chasing a phony contact, he ignored it and claimed to sink two submarines off Oregon in 1943.  He lacked essential qualities of judgement something the navy later relieved him of his command for "Lack of Quality judgement, Leadership and Cooperation.

He was basically a below average naval officer, but in war time even bottom of the barrel is better then nothing.

As far as shelling Cooney Island, he thought it was apart of United states territory, the idiot can't even read a map (which by the way he ranked very LOW on Sea navigation skills).

I give the man credit he served during the war, but he could of shoveled horse shiat and been better at it.

Fletcher added that "there is a known magnetic deposit in the area in which depth charges were dropped", absolving the responding blimps from any fault as their method of detecting submarines relies on a [MAD]. This also implied that Lt. Hubbard and his crew were operating the ship's SONAR equipment incorrectly."

Just finished Battlefield Earth a couple of days ago.  Took me months ... I read about 5-10 pages a night.  Anyway, it was an entertaining read, but Hubbard does have a tendency to take literary shots at things he doesn't like.  I thought it somewhat amusing.

I honestly can't blame him for the scientology thing though.  Let's face it, anyone that goes into a religion to that extreme would just pick another religion if scientology wasn't there.  Christianity, for instance, has more than a few crazies that puts scientology to shame.  I haven't decided which believes in weirder shiat though.

One of the tenents of Scientology is a sort of pseudo re-encarnation of the person. Sea Org members (This is what they actually believe) sign a 1 Million year Contract with the toy navy. They actually agree to come back after their re-encarnation to continue their service to the Scientologists.

You can't blame him for scienctology?  How do you figure that?  He was the one who made up the religion and profited handsomely by it. I'm not sure how much more you could be responsible for said religion.

I can imagine the magnetic deposit showing up if it's shape was somehow different than the surrounding terrain. A sonar might see it then and it would have nothing to do with its being magnetic or not.

The magnetic deposit is given as a reason that the responding blimps believed there might be a sub there. The other ships all said they didn't see any sonar evidence of a sub.
