One of my relatives worked as a court reporter.  One of the cases she worked on was one of these stings.

The guy was from out of the country and was just looking to talk.  He even said that numerous times during the chat.  The cop basically egged him on and implied that he was gay if he wasn't interested in sex with the non-existent underage girl.

The guy was appealing the sentence and I don't know the outcome of his case, but it sounded a lot like this one where they keep pushing until they get an incriminating statement and then they push for the meeting.  Also, there was another case of a morbidly obese guy that couldn't leave his bed.  They had to go to his house to arrest him, the sheriff said without any sense of irony, that they got another predator off the streets.

Taskforces get a lot of fed money and they have to show arrests.  These are the easiest kind of enforcement since they have an almost 100% conviction rate and almost everyone pleads out.

It sounds like government funded perv-on-perv chatting. It's not normal behavior for an adult man to want to role play as a 14 yr old girl trying to get the attention of another man. I'm pretty sure there was a time when that was a crime, too. Not sure who's protecting/molesting who. Weird.

groppet: What if one day a 13 year old is posing as a 40 year old and goes to a police sting. What happens then?

Here's the short version:

1. Girl says she's 21 and has ID that says that she's 21 and she looks 21 so you believe it. Girl is really 15. You are farked because it doesn't matter what you believe, only the facts matter.

2. You're chatting with a girl that says that she's 15 and that acts 15 so you believe it. Girl is really a 40 year old guy. You are farked because it doesn't matter what the facts are, only what you believed does.

You will be farked either way because they get to choose option 1 or option 2.

I just want to point out the story two lines down about the raped 14-year old girl as counterpoint to this one, and present the two as proof of how irrevocably farked our society has become at handling crimes of underage and/or non-consensual sex.

Don't feel sorry for the guy at all.  Once "she" mentioned a 14 year old, the conversation ends.  It's kind of sad that this article was greenlighted and used as an aid to teach pedophiles what specific language and actions they should take to avoid prosecution.

There will probably come a time when a cop ends up chatting with another cop. Wonder how that arrest will go.

Well I only read the first page and a half of the article but it seemed to me that the guy didn't set out to fark a 14 year old. Looks like the "older sis" pushed awfully damn hard to get him to commit to it but he never came right out and said he wanted to fark the younger one. He might have planned on getting the older sister in bed and blowing off the younger one once he arrived.

Wish they would put the same efforts into stopping / finding folks who are out committing crimes on their own without being enticed

But..I guess when you get the perps to come to you..more time for donuts

Digitalstrange: Was I supposed to feel sorry for this guy? No matter how they tried to warm and fuzzy him up and how he was hedging his bets he was talking about banging a 14 year old. Maybe it's just that I have a teen daughter myself but I'm OK with that sting.

I'm sure there are times when the cops go too far (like the other poster mentioned about the guy too obese to leave the house, obviously he was just indulging in fantasy he could never follow through with) but this wasn't it. Yeah. hardly the most dangerous predator out there but a predator none the less

What I read before TL;DR set in, he could argue he was planning to get his foot in the door by playing daddy to both, then wedge them apart over the course of the night so he could lock the bedroom door and bang the hell out of the legal one while the underage one slept on the couch.  Everybody knows she'd be asleep from the wine coolers by 9 anyway.

And if there seems like there is anything wrong with that, you obviously have no idea what efforts and practices have proven not only successful, but necessary to get laid on the first date on the cheap.

I just read this story and the story (3 slots down) about the girl who was raped and - thereafter - terrorised by the town where the rapist happened to be the son of a prominent local politico

and it makes you think the world (or, at least the US) has gone completely nuts, totally farking nutso

Do they train these officers to chat like underage teenage girls?

I bet a few of these cops are living out a fetish they have.

I used to work for my university's continuing education / adult education program.

This was back in the '90s, (Yes, I'm old) when smaller departments didn't have Uncle Sugar (DHS) throwing money at them, and high speed internet didn't go most places yet.

We had two computer labs, (Pentium 90s, baby!) which would be filled most evenings with police officers - either getting training on how to do this, or doing actual stings. I saw some of the course materials they left behind, and it included bits on communicating like a teenager.

I don't know, I'm not all knowing, but if that conversation started up on craigs list, the first thought about a 14 year old sister should be......NO.  Then after dwelling on that for twenty minutes, the second thought would "I wonder if that was the cops."

/then you gotta think.....shiat, now do I need to report this?  Because if it's the cops.........

One of the leading cases on the entrapment defense came when the federal child porn law was new. Postal inspectors got a customer list and tried to get customers to buy the newly illegal product. They kept sending their target catalogs until he finally gave in. The Supreme Court called that entrapment. (wikilink)

Prosecutors know that most defendants will plead guilty for a lesser sentence rather than offer an affirmative defense and risk two or three times the prison term. They have little incentive to ask law enforcement to go after guilty people.

FTA:Deconfliction has grown in importance over the last few years; so many agencies now run stings that the chances of a suspect talking to several different police agencies at once are non-trivial.

And these dumbfarks still walk into the traps.

I hope law enforcement realizes that they only truly catch the dumbest mother farkers with these things, the truly smart just have the girls come to them not go to them.

.....not that I know anything about that
