relaxitsjustme: Don't really care as it depends on what you plan on using it for. Virgin is fine if you're sweating onions for a marinara sauce. First cold pressed for dipping or salad dressing. And forget Europe, COOC is where it's at.
jjorsett: Hmmm. The Yurrupeens enacted an olive oil law that said it couldn't be served in anything other than sealed, one-time-use, factory-labeled bottles. They said it was to avoid adulteration and fraud, but the real effect was to screw small local producers who couldn't afford a bottling line and whose products restaurants were using. That would give large industrial producers an effective olivegarchy. Luckily the outcry got the law ditched, but I wonder if something like that is the real motivator in this case?
spcMike: Olive oil imported from Italy is typically oil from Spain that's been blended in Italy. You'll never see actual Italian olive oil in the store because they keep that for themselves.But there are plenty of American olive oil companies that sell extra virgin.

Spanish oil is better. Spain has a better growing season for olives. Spanish grown Hojiblanca olives make excellent oil, far better than the bitter crap that comes out of Italy.
