Which they drew water from via many 5" hoses.  Actually they drew water from the bay, not the ocean, but whatever.  It takes a special kinda sick fark to make light of this.  Some of these people had just finished rebuilding and reopened after losing everything to Sandy.  And now they've lost everything again.  But fark-'m right?  Damned business owners who employ people and pay taxes.  Who needs 'em!?  AMIRIGHT?

Depends, many of those businesses operate under the same model used in carnivals where the space they operate in is a sublet and there is nothing to insure other than operational continuity and equipment.

These shore resorts will rebuild whatever it takes. It could've been Wildwood or Ocean City, MD or Rehoboth Beach, Del or Myrtle Beach, Va. take your pick. All have generated not only revenue for their states but countless cherished Family Memories for Generations. Families take their kids to the beach, That's what we do.

Depending on payouts from Sandy it wouldn't shock me if some of them had to lower future pay out amounts so they could meet future operational costs. But as you point out, it's a calculated risk one takes as a business owner.

Well there is a reason you prefer to use desalinated water to put out fires but yes that reason is complete bullshiat. Salt water can be used to extinguish fires however the result is a concentration of salt and minerals in the fire location which could contribute to an ecological problem as it will kill very living thing in that location.

....of course this is Jersey we're talking about so I guess it would be a wash

It started at Kohr's Custard Stand, which has been there for decades. That part of the boardwalk wasn't hit by Sandy as badly as some other sections, like Casino pier, where the roller coaster was. This wasn't a case of shoddy repair work. It seems to be a matter of lack of first responders (many had left too attend a friend's convention in Wildwood), 30mph winds, and the fact that there are only 2 roads into that town. Just a bad combination of events.

I think it has more to do with it being low tide and maybe sucking up as much sand as water. But that's just a guess

That was one of the most visceral firefights I'd ever watched.

Cutting the firebreaks through the boardwalk was a desperation move, and appears to have worked in the end.

What good is an ocean full of water going to be to a bunch of businesses if they don't have at the ready under pressure in a sprinkler system? The fire crews had no choice but to go and pump it from the bay/ocean because the water service to that area hasn't been completely repaired from Sandy. The goal should be to put the fire out soon after it starts in a business with a sprinkler system so that it does spread far. Not wait for some fire crew to get onsite, hook up to the water system, find out there isn't enough service, call in a pumper, drag lines to the bay, and THEN start spraying water on the fire.

Sandy was bad because nobody in their right mind would insure them for flood, and easily could have excluded the wind/hail peril. When it comes to fire, that's the most basic peril covered even under Standard Property Policies that are purchased on "distressed" properties. I highly doubt the properties were that distressed, so they likely have BOP coverage, which includes coverage for both fire and business income.

The only problem is whether or not they are not carrying the proper level of insurance. But, if they met the 80% coinsurance clause, or have agreed value, they will receive the full policy limit for this occurrence.
