Matthew Keene: I heard a story many years ago that the Gateway Arch was originally the Gateway St Louis Space Needle. It was 1200 feet tall and had a rotating Howard Johnson's Restaurant at the top. Shortly after the dedication, it buckled in the middle and the rotating restaurant screwed itself into the Mississippi Riverbank. The center of the needle had been designed to thin. Thirty-five people died, if I do remember correctly. They managed to cover the event up pretty quick, and only a few people ever recall hearing the only news bulletin on the disaster on KXOK/630 radio. It was quickly renamed the Gateway Arch, and all promotional materials for a 'space needle' were destroyed.
