By lifetime; I assume you ment to say " until the first planetwide sand storm destroys all of the solar panels".

I never said it'd be a long lifetime!

The group running it just isn't credible.... They don't address any of the tech hurdles, or where they will get the funding. Sounds like they are just getting a bunch of gullible fools for a reality TV show based on tricking into thinking they are competing for a spot on the Mars Mission.

So, the first manned mission to Mars is going to be up to a public vote???  So the first people going to Mars won't be picked because they're the best or most qualified, they're the ones able to get the votes?  This is going to be a Mars mission filled with clueless hotties who will manage to crash into Venus.

/not saying it's a bad thing
//has to be the most creative way to get rid of attention whores

Only if I can take beer and smokes.  That'll be a boring ass trip about six days in.

If I remember correctly they were looking at four flights.

So the people on the first flight will likely be the Martian equivalent of Roanoke?

The people you'd want to volunteer for this sort of thing never do. Trump. Limbaugh. Paris Hilton. Fred Phelps.

Application fees? Merchandise opportunities? "Donate here" buttons.

We need a revival of The Music Man to bring the concept of this type of scam to everyone's attention.

"The most applications - 37,852 - come from the United States, which represents about 23 percent of submissions, "

College loans catching up to them?  Because they want to?  The economy stinks and it's not going to get better?  Three hots and a cot with out the trial and subsequent sodomy?
Methink's it's not so much going to as getting away from that's the issue here.

This would be a great way to get rid of stupid people. And when we finally have the tech to reach Mars safely we can go collect the bodies and use them for fertilizer.

"The first?" You mean there will be more than one one-way mission to Mars?
