The pair are being held in a local women's prison, but if convicted they are likely to be sent to a notorious women's jail called Santa Monica in Chorrillos.

The prison was built for just 250 women but now houses more than 1,000 in filthy conditions  in which HIV and tuberculosis  are rife.

Oh, they are going to LOVE you...

I think it is astounding that they know it is run by gangs and corrupt guards and rather than clean it up they use it as a harsher punishment.

danielscissorhands: Kinda feel bad for them.

What are the chances they will serve time in prison without getting raped by the cops or the male guards?

There was an episode of Locked up Abroad where a MAN was raped by the cops in South American.

Locked Up Abroad reeeeeally needs to be required viewing before one is allowed to obtain a passport.

But police do not believe the girls' story, and prosecutors are thought to want them to serve the maximum prison term after becoming frustrated with their version of events.

Translation: The drug cartel paid off police and prosecutors.
