Breaking Bad is one of those shows that makes me angry at other shows for not being as good. I watched Dexter immediately after Breaking Bad last night and was actually getting angry at the Dexter writers for being so crappy.

It's my fault for not giving up on Dexter years ago, but I have watched since the first season and have to see how it ends.

While I agree, technically speaking, we're still in the fifth season. Vince Gilligan said that season five would be in two parts, seperated by a break, and that the second part is not season six.

The problem with Dexter is that they are trying to play everything straight. If you are going to be bad, you need to embrace the badness like True Blood has. Now that the show has seemingly abandoned any semblance of taking its premise seriously, it is actually a fun watch now. The hilariously incompetent catfight on the episode before last, for example, was wonderful.

It's not. The portable defib units are idiot-proof, and will not shock unless they actually detect fibrillation. This is a safety feature to keep Jue Hero from shocking someone who is down for another reason.

I can agree with this. I mostly watch stuff on Netflix so I get suggestions for shows that aren't even close to being what BB is. One (PERFECT) example is Weeds. The first few seasons were funny and worth watching. By season 6 I felt like I was watching the worst train wreck ever. I pretty much watched the last few seasons just to see how the hell they were going to end it.

****SPOILERS***I kept hoping that someone would just hit her hard enough to move the bullet far enough into her brain to turn her into a vegetable. I hated the character Nancy Botwin so much at this point. (And yet for all his faults, I still love Walter White) If I've spoiled anything for anyone currently watching Weeds, save yourself the time and stop watching after Season 4.

I can agree with this. I mostly watch stuff on Netflix so I get suggestions for shows that aren't even close to being what BB is. One (PERFECT) example is Weeds. Ha, thanks... We were watching the final season of Weeds on Netflix, but just kind of petered out and lost interest because it got too weird. I was thinking about picking it back up again, but now I probably won't. Sounds like our instinct to stop watching wasn't unfounded.

I could care less if someone put spoiler tags or not, I'm with the guy above: it's been a year since the first half of season 5 came out. The spoiler time limit has passed, if you haven't seen those episodes yet, not my problem. Please, listify me capn!

Difference being, OITNB is based on a book, whereas Weeds was not. I guess if they decide they want to continue past the ending of the book things could go off the rails though...

The guys commenting on Dexter at The AV Club actually made a game of imagining what Breaking Bad would be like if it were done by the Dexter writers, which led to gold like this:

*Hank punches Walt*

Hank: You're Heisenberg! You've been cooking and selling meth and destroying your family and killing people and generally engaging in tons of illegal activity!!!

Walt VO: I think he's on to me.

Ghost Gus: I think he may be on to you, Walter.

Walt: Are you on to me, Hank?

As for the episode itself, I did the opposite, watching Dexter first because I wanted to BB to have that much more of an impact but coming to the exact same conclusion. The two shows were in the exact same position last night- eight episodes to go before the series finale (a deliberate choice on Showtime's part, I'm sure), and the difference couldn't have been more apparent. There's no sense of urgency with Dexter, no real sense of tension. Characters and storylines get added and dropped at random, motivations change scene to scene, and when something important DOES happen, the show has to beat you over the head with it via narration, Ghost Harry, exposition, etc. Breaking Bad, on the other hand, had more plot development in the last ten minutes of last night's episode than Dexter has all season, trusting its audience to put two and two together when the situation calls for it.

Yeah, I get that. But the Jenji Kohan connection is what scares me. I mean, Weeds had been one of my favorite shows. And then it completely went off the rails. I can't think of another show I watched that crashed and burned as quickly as Weeds.

I think I stopped watching at season 4, not sure but it was the season she found out she was pregnant from the mayor/cartel leader. I do remember me and my roomate got into a big heated argument over her ratting out the tunnel because she hated the slave trade going through it. My roomate said she was right to do it, I said she wasent because yeah it was farked up, but she is doing illegal things anyways and she cant stop and cry foul when they do something even worse. Also she put her family and friends at risk by ratting them out, the cartels would have killed them all.

Yeah, I get that. But the Jenji Kohan connection is what scares me. I mean, Weeds had been one of my favorite shows. And then it completely went off the rails. I can't think of another show I watched that crashed and burned as quickly as Weeds.

I was nervous about it as well since I really liked the first season of OITNB and had to stop watching Weeds around season 3 (my wife trudged through it to the end). Given that I think Jenji is going to be somewhat bound to certain storylines, I can't see it going too far off the rails. *fingers crossed*

I would replace Emilio with Krazy-8, and add in the elimination of the guys in prison. That montage of shankings plus a bonus burning alive was horrifying.

It's one of the few shows in existence that brings its "A" game in pretty much every facet of a show (character development, cinematography, etc). The attention to detail in everything is borderline neurotic and unhealthy.

There are other shows that I think are really excellent at times, but Breaking Bad is always good. There was only one episode I didn't like, and it centered around a fly in the lab. I know others who thought that episode was brilliant, so I am not implying that the episode was bad, just that I didn't like it. One episode I didn't care for in 5 1/2 seasons is pretty darn good.

Heh, I thought that was an alright episode, but it definitely had the feel of Gilligan & Co being cocky and just saying to everyone "fark you, we're so good at what we do that we can make an entire episode around this".

And, well, they're basically right.

I think the second cousin crawling out of the bed towards Walt is one of my favorite scenes from the show.

Oh, yeah, I can't believe I (and TFA) forgot about that one. Shocking and gruesome.

As homarjr mentioned, they had to do a cheap one because they had spent so much money creating the lab set. I started watching it on a flight and at first thought it might be one I could skip (I had a lot to catch up on at that point) but I'm glad I didn't.

It's one of the few shows in existence that brings its "A" game in pretty much every facet of a show (character development, cinematography, etc). The attention to detail in everything is borderline neurotic and unhealthy.

And the consistency over the seasons is remarkable. The show never does anything out of character, every move is rational yet still unpredictable, and it wastes almost no motion. Nearly every second of the show drives the story forward. There are shows with deeper subtext, but no show tells a story better than Breaking Bad.

and remember the guys in the chicken truck that were trying to stop the hijackings that get locked in and gassed.

no one has actually been killed by walt and jessie's ricin yet. amazing.

You could argue the only time the show sort of betrayed itself was with the Fring death scene, but I can forgive them because I think it was just to show a certain "respect" for his badassery.
