Outside the Coliseum, Rome, Italy
Summer 2011

This is one of my favorite shots from that trip. It so beautifully encapsulates Roman culture across the centuries.

Cult of the Innocent Child
Marseille, France

(This tomb is thought to be where the Cult of the Innocent Child was started, it is in the crypt of L'abbaye Saint-Victor in Marseille, France. The tomb has markings of Pagan rituals and writings, left overs of when Pagan groups had rituals in the rock quarry before the Christian Abbey was built. It was pretty neat to see such things in the basement of a Catholic church!)

Tibetan Buddhist monks pour a portion of the sand from a mandala into the Oconee River in (Baldwin County) Milledgeville, Georgia. May 22, 2008.

The mandala is a meticulously-constructed sand painting that holds deep spiritual meaning to the Tibetan Buddhist monks and the country thousands of miles away that they call home.

Sanskrit for "circle" or "wheel," a mandala is a symmetrical geometric design usually enclosed in a circle that is a geometrical representation of the mandalas found in nature.

Through careful, almost unconscious design, a mandala can allow an individual to experience a closer feeling of inner peace, a lowering of stress levels, and can bring out creative instincts and desires sometimes previously unknown to the creator.

As part of the mandala process, the painting is created and then destroyed. The monks believe that when the sand is poured into the water, the water spirits are summoned and nourished by the consecrated sand.

The mandala took more than one week to craft by hand. To take this photo, I removed my shoes and socks and waded ankle-deep into the river banks about ten feet downstream.

(From my personal collection. I'm not sure whether this represents religious belief, or the belief that a tiny, poorly-written and illustrated document will instantly change one's understanding of the universe.)

"Blame the Catholic Church for not letting me wear one of those little rubber things. Oh, they've done some wonderful things in their time. They preserved the might and majesty, even the mystery, of the Church of Rome, the sanctity of the sacrament, and the indivisible oneness of the Trinity. But if they'd let me wear one of those little rubber things on the end of my cock, we wouldn't be in the mess we are now. "

A spirit house or san phra phum (Thai: ) is a shrine to the protective spirit of a place that are found in the Southeast Asian countries of Burma, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand. Most houses and businesses have a spirit house placed in an auspicious spot, most often in a corner of the property. The spirit house is normally in the form of a miniature house or temple, and is mounted on a pillar or on a dais. The house is intended to provide a shelter for spirits which could cause problems for the people if not appeased. The shrines often include images of people and animals. Votive offerings are left at the house to propitiate the spirits. More elaborate installations include an altar for this purpose. The offerings range from oranges and cognac to orange crush and rice. Bangkok has thousands of them in assorted shapes and sizes.

Women at the Cathedral of Assissi
Assissi, Italy
Summer 2011

Apparently, in Catholic Churches, Basilicas and Cathedrals, women are not supposed to have exposed shoulders or skirts above the knee. Men aren't supposed to, either. Many Italian Cathedrals and Basilicas provide these cover-alls when women show up over-exposed, as it were.
