Dunno if they still do it this way, but it used to be that if you appealed a suspension, your case was held over until your team visited New York, because that's where the league offices are. This also meant that if your suspension was upheld, the New York teams benefited from your absence. Advantage: Yankees and Mets.

That call was the baseball equivalent of traveling - that pitch was a strike but no one ever calls it. If pitchers actually got to pitch up to the letters and get calls, baseball games would be a lot shorter and you wouldn't need all these relievers.

You also don't play a position, or pitch...you really don't play much of anything.

"I hit."

Not in this game, you didn't - you took two walks and tried to take another on this one without so much as staying in the box for the pitch to cross the plate.

"You're not going to take my at-bats away."

Actually, he (and your ineptness on the two ensuing pitches) GAVE you an at-bat - you seemed perfectly happy to give up an at-bat by walking away from pitch four. And you gave away two at-bats earlier on walks, too.

It clearly touched the strike zone, calls like that are called strikes more often than not in baseball, he was probably more upset because he made himself look stupid for throwing his bat and having to go pick it up.

I actually saw a game this season where the home plate umpire was using the old-style balloon chest protector. I wish I could remember what game it was, because I'd love to compare pitching charts to see if the high strike was called.

That's not what that particular rules says.  If you are not given time and step out then the pitch is called however the ump decides to call it, it's not an automatic strike.  However, the ump can simply award a strike if the batter simply refuses to get in the batters box in a timely fashion.    That being said, even if the rule was written as you stated, in this particular case it would have been an incorrect application, since Ortiz was not actually out of the box when the pitch was delivered.

Yeah, pitch #5 was borderline, could go either way depending on the umpire. It seems some take issue with Ortiz stepping back from the plate on pitch #4's delivery, but that's done a lot by players when a pitcher can't find the strikezone. Ortiz was taking the pitch all the way. I don't have video of the entire at-bat, but it took me a second to find pitch #2. It's located below the "n" on "Horizontal" in the graph, so it was in the dirt. To be honest, I can understand Ortiz having a problem with the umpire's calls, but his dugout antics were a bit much. Side note, Jairo Ascencio was DFA'd this morning.

I wish MLB umpires were forced to officiate an NFL game.  One of two things would happen.

1. They'd all die of strokes by the end of the first quarter because they can't handle the fact that they can't toss anyone who yells at them (which happens on every other play) out of the game.

2. There wouldn't be a single defensive lineman, defensive back, or wide receiver left on the field by the 12th attempted pass.

Hey now, the MLB drug testing policy is 100% perfect, just ignore the fact that the Biogenesis bunch passed tests while they were juicing. There is no way Ortiz can be juicing!

I generally like/hate/respect Ortiz, but that was farking reckless.

When your teammate has to duck your wild and angrily swinging bat, IN THE DUGOUT, you're being an arsehole. As much as I want to see the Red Sox play poorly, Ortiz injuring Dusty in the dugout would not be how it should go down.
