Tragically she was a short lived heroine. She saved 3 families from Christian missionaries, pulled a woman from a burning car, and rescued a puppy from drowning. But she forgot that she needed a male family member to escort her in public, so was and so was stoned to death at the end of the first book.

Saw this a week ago. Thought it was dumb and still absurd as hell. But then drew back a bit and well... For Pakistani standards, it's pretty cool. Obviously they have a long way to go, but it's something. So that's good.

Well this is great news for Pakistani girls being repressed by their families... or it would be, if it weren't for the fact that if they dared to read comics or watch tv they would probably be murdered by their families, to preserve the family's honor (or if they're lucky, just maimed with acid).

Yes, it's a lovely part of the world for women!

And every bit to to help educate the children is one more push towards sanity later on.  It's an attempt to change the direction of the boat.  It won't happen on a dime.   Maybe in 30 or 40 years they will be where the western was in the 1800's, and stop with all the killing of women and children.  Maybe in 100 years the rednecks over there will be as openly derided as they are in the U.S.

Or, you could just do nothing and biatch and moan about how bad the problem is without actually doing or supporting any effort at change.

I was prepared to hate it, but the more I read, the more I like it.
I also think I "like" the way the burka, being the tool of oppressors, is turned back on those very oppressors by being used as a shield as she fights them.

Idiot ex-friend of mine thinks women wearing burkas is "not so bad."  His reasoning is that women continued to wear burkas even after they were "liberated", ignoring the extremely probable reason that despite their "liberation", they would still be under social pressure by strict, fanatical families or neighbors.

(He doesn't fully understand what a burka is either: he seems to think it means any woman wearing a headscarf. As he has argued, if Middle Eastern women prefer to be modest, it's not a bad thing.)

The only smart reply I could come up with that is "If you don't think it's that bad, then you wear one."

/He hasn't taken up that offer; he continues to immodestly parade around in his shorts.

Agreed. I thought that was a beautiful moment of parallel thought they had -- realizing their symbol of oppression resembles a symbol of power in other cultures. It made me smile to think that little girls forced to wear burkas could at least feel like superheroes while doing it. And maybe someone of them will take a hint and realize that anonymity grants power. It would be amusing if the men turned around and banned the burka because of an anonymous uprising.

Of course, a "secret identity" would do nothing to protect her when there is no rule of law, let alone when the police state openly sides with her enemies. No detective work is even needed on the part of the bad guys, they just start killing any woman they think might be the Burkha Avenger, all the while proclaiming that the killings will continue until the real Burkha Avenger disappears for good. If they don't add her to the mass grave by random chance (or if they do and a successor decides to take up the cause), eventually the executions will make the very people she's trying to stand up for start turning on her even while she rescues them, willing to kill themselves just to stop the government sanctioned slaughter the only way they can.
