I sometimes wonder if they intentionally prevent their attractive people from being photographed, as a measure to camouflage their overall demographic and discourage American immigrants.

It's more to do with attitudes to beauty - in America there are plenty of unphotogenic people but your media avoids showing their pictures or having them on tv. Thus you get a false idea of beauty. Here in Britain we revel in the average, the normal looking people. Being ugly is not a block to you being famous for 15 minutes.
