As a scientist I can say that kind of stuff is fun, repeating a measurement 1,000 times to make sure it's right? Not so much.

Yeah, probably, but you'd still need twice the track, or double sided track at least, which might as well be twice the track.  More like twice the ride for half the footprint.

Perhaps he is skilled enough to pour it without spilling it on himself. I don't wear gloves or goggles when pouring it. (I do get a little nervous sometimes when students are handling it.)

It's not sulfuric acid. Splash a little on yourself, and it just leidenfrosts itself onto the floor. Bad news if it soaks something you're wearing, or pours onto you with force.

This. Scientists figure out how things superconduct. Engineers build mobeus strip monorails out of them.  The former is rewarding, but not that much fun.
