I have known many British families who expatriated elsewhere to educate their daughters, sexism may be on the decline but its still prevalent enough that unless a young woman is exceptionally bright or determined they can be shoehorned into an education and career path that leaves them with a secretarial position.

This idea of a woman going to college to find a man is a manifestation of that sort of sexism, the idea that women aren't really bound to join the competitive workforce.

That's not to say that professional British women aren't on the upswing, but the British gender gap is significantly wider than the American, and they play it off far more casually.

Of all the women I met in college, only one said she was there for her "Mrs. Degree".  It's not common.

Check that, I think it's still very common at the private Christian "universities".
