Once upon a time, cartoons like this one

... were really funny. It was a time when middle class Baby Boomers were just reinventing themselves as Yuppies, and for a couple years New Yorker cartoons did a good job of lampooning the newly contrived culture.

Last time I looked at New Yorker cartoons it seemed like they were trying to milk that same shtick for all it was worth, 25 years after they should have moved on to something different, and it all seemed sad, unfunny, and pointless.

Now that I've had a chance to actually watch the video, that was a really interesting talk and the example cartoons were really funny, much funnier than I'd expected. The last time I shuffled through an issue of The New Yorker, it must have either been a dud issue, or I wasn't in any mood to laugh at anything.

I kind of spent most of 2011 in a mood like that...
