I'm sure they'll find a way to blow it again.

As I type this, the Pirates are enjoying the second-best record in the majors. Unless they fall into their traditional post-All-Star Game slump, this, indeed, could be the year!

They're 17 games over .500. Which is AMAZING.

/But you're right. They'll blow it.
//Still, I'd rather they make the playoffs than merely finish above .500. If you're gonna fail, do it right.

I'm from Pittsburgh and have been a Pirates fan all my life. My cousin is from Chicago and likes the Cubs.

This enables us to follow politics with the fervor of sports fans because nothing that could ever happen would be worse than what we've already endured fandom-wise. If our teams fail to suck as badly as usual, we rejoice, but we know that any hope will be short-lived, so it's best to focus on politics, which is a hell of a lot less depressing. And yes, I know how awful that sounds.

We even make little index cards with favorite politicians' voting records and achievements and we have rules for a fantasy-politics game that plays kind of like Magic: The Gathering except you use approval ratings like mana and instead of monsters you have scandals and issue-related events and such. You can play as any ideology you like or even do mixed decks and we've gotten everybody from Ron Paul fanboys to Tea Partiers to Nader supporters to play with us, plus with Tournament rules you can have any politician from history you like. Political theorists who never held office work like artifacts,

/just made myself Texas State Sen. Wendy Davis and Sen. Leticia Van De Putte cards last night.
//really looking forward to testing out my new sister-suffragette lefty-progressive deck against this libertarian friend of mine

Good luck.

Being a life long Pirate fan isn't so bad. I mean I could be as Yankee fan, but a league with the DH technically isn't even baseball so there's little point in that.48-30, .615, Tied for first - I'll take it.Besides, I defy any other team to produce a single pitcher that has thrown a no-hitter on acid. And let's just all agree that pops had the best pre-pitch swing routine EVER. And if you don't agree with that, may Roberto gun you down at home, on the fly, from heaven.
