NutWrench: Maybe this!
Mr. Right: Remember that cows are taken out of their element when they're in a dairy herd. They are kept in barns instead of running on pastures. If you watch cows in a pasture, they pick a soft, shady, lush spot in which to lie whenever possible. Providing a waterbed in a barn is a good idea. After all, there is so much that is gained from diet and management. That level of production is available to all farmers. What gets a bit more out of the cow is when the cow is comfortable. It could add a few thousand pounds of production during a lactation.

blottoman: OK, is there a limit?Throw 'em in zero gravity, attach electrodes to there brains... must have milk!
Great Porn Dragon: Uh...waterbeds for dairy cattle have been a thing for some time, actually (especially among smaller farms explicitly working towards better animal welfare); the cows are more comfy and produce better milk. (Same reason they have the "cow carwash" things for dairy cattle to rub against and wash themselves, and same reason why a number of dairy farms now have "cow comes in when it wants to for milking" and RFID ear tags to identify the Bessie in question. Happy and comfy cows do in general tend to give better milk.)
