You know what frustrates me? I have to give them a point for remembering that pterosaurs don't count as dinosaurs.

Delawheredad: I AM NOT defending these nut jobs BUT it is very possible that myths of dragons originated in part from dinosaur bones found back when man was more superstitious then MOST folks are today.

For instance, back in the backwardfarkistan make-a-mythology-from-whatever-period, there's a rock-slide near some river that opens up the rock strata underneath, which just happen to contain a T-rex skull.

Now, some dude comes walking buy and has the living bejesusing shait scared out of him by what appears to be some HORRIFYING BEAST WITH HUGE TEETH coming out of the rock, only to realize they're bones. But of what?

And so would begin the storytelling.

Your links do not support your claim. The Creation Museum was built with private funding. And the "museum" was open several years prior to those incentives.

Those incentives that the State of Kentucky gave were for an entirely different project which is a partnership between AiG and a for-profit religiously-themed park that has yet to be built. State governments give such incentives in hopes the state will recoup the lost revenue by increased spending by tourists who come to the state to visit the attraction. My understanding is that the progress on that project has been really lackluster and with any luck it won't happen. But on the other hand, there are enough dumb rich people out there...

Creationists basically work by distraction.

They want you to avoid looking at scientific evidence, bc that is overwhelmingly (1 billion to zero) anti Creationism

They have a constituency - people who want to believe that all the bible is literally true, bc other bits of the bible promise them that they will go to Heaven if they believe.

So the Creationists invent consoling stories which all have the same theme: "Look this might be true, so therefore Jesus"

And that is enough for their flock.

(Of note--the lady's companion predatory dinosaur is the fastest creature known to exist, capable of hunting its prey (other dinosaurs) at speeds very close to that of an IRL car. :D)

(I would post a pic of one of these human-habituated predatory dinosaurs having successfully caught another dinosaur, but the pics I have found were a bit gory and probably would be in Violation Of The Rules here. Predatory dinosaurs, as a rule, are somewhat messy eaters.)

I think I may have made the point a bit clearer in my post above, birds ARE dinosaurs, and are actually not too terribly distant relatives from ol' T. rex itself--and rather closer still to dromaeosaurs, the "raptors" of movie infamy. (In fact, birds and dromies are generally considered to be sister groups, and there have been proposals to even frankly reclassify Archaeopteryx as a dromie proper. Tyrannosaurs are a bit more distant, but still well within the Maniraptora and there are even some older members of the tyrannosaur clade that had feathers and would probably pass as toothy flightless birds if spotted nowadays. Dromies like Deinonychus and Velociraptor would pass even more so as "toothy birds".)

The Coelacanth is a fish, not a dinosaur. Many people have seen dinosaurs, and some even claim to have eaten dinosaur meat, but the media don't talk about it much. It's an open secret among taxonomists though - they all know.

I have eaten different kinds of dinosaur meat, and (by and large) they are all awesome. :D

Archaic-body-form theropod dinosaur, interestingly, does tend to taste a bit like very lean beef--cooked rare, it's not bad at all. Water-based dinosaur is better yet, though (and tends to be surprisingly good with sweet stuffings and dressings; the water-living dinosaurs tend to be just a bit fatty and a good citrus or plum sauce complements the rich meat nicely).

We also seem to have a wee bit of a gift for preparing a particular clade of theropod dinosaur (Galliformes)--there was a guy (who also made a big deal out of being a member of a certain honourary order in Kentucky of Good Fellows) who did some real wonders with pressure-cooked dinosaur, and there were also some very interesting things done by his rather less-well-known wife and brother (honestly, I prefer his brother's recipe for Southern Dinosaur, but that's my own two pence). Even the likes of Stephen Colbert have sang the praises of dinosauriform a la Kentucky. (That said--some nice herbs and a rotisserie oven also work very well for it.)

And then there's also a larger galliform theropod that tends to make some good eating--not just in the traditional manner as supposedly introduced by the Narrangassett First Nation (who had apparently hunted wild dinosaurs for food and had even domesticated them in part) but even--get ready for this--things like dinosaur cold-cuts and dinosaur sausage.

(There are also some other little galliform dinosaurs that are good eating as well, as well as some Columbiformes theropod dinosaurs, but generally you need more than one of those for a meal unless you're going for a small one or have a number of sides. There are people who do truly sing the praises of a meal of the smaller galliforms or columbiforms, though, enough that there are established Dinosaur Hunting Seasons for them in much of this country.)

Welcome to Ameriran, chump. The reversible osmosis of church and state is in full effect.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. The money was probably for roads and other infrastructure. They do the same for stadiums and malls. Tourist tax dollars are good even if it comes from stupid people.

A couple of things:

1) Tax incentives are not subsidies: (from the wiki) In May 2011, the Kentucky Tourism Development Finance Authority voted unanimously to grant sales tax rebates of up to 25 percent of project capital costs over a 10-year period up to $43.1 million for the $172 million project that's otherwise being financed by a group of private investors. Ark Encounter will not receive any money up front, but will get a rebate of the sales tax collected after the first year and every year after that for ten years. Groundbreaking for the $172 million Ark Encounter project is expected in August, 2011, at the Grant County site because of approval for tax rebates

2) As of June 2013, ground has not been broken to begin construction of this arson target eyesore.

...incentives aren't subsidies? A subsidy is a reduction of cost to encourage something to happen. So... a rebate of 25% of sales tax on capital costs is pretty much exactly what a subsidy is. If BobCo isn't taxed as much as AliceCo but they ostensibly do similar things, then BobCo is being subsidized. What's worse is that it's the government subsidizing a religious institution. Do they give any new museum that kind of tax incentive?

Yeah, they gave NASCAR a similar exemption. It's to generate revenue and jobs, not to subsidize development.

A tax break a is not a direct subsidy, as if the state is paying someone to be there. Instead, the state is collecting less sales tax as an incentive to generate more revenue from jobs and tourist dollars. It's an indirect subsidy at best, but if the local economy garners more money in income tax from jobs generated then it may end up not being any subsidy at all. It's lost potential revenue for a limited time, which is a more than normal offering for any business looking to move into an area. And at the end of the day - that museum is a business.

IIRC, the Democratic governor treated it like a theme park opening. The only problem people seem to have with it is the subject matter, but if it ends up being a financial net positive for the state, then Kentucky was within its rights to offer a tax break. Even the NY Times pointed out there wasn't enough wrong with the breaks to sue about them.

Also, this isn't the Ark project. The Creation Museum is operating at full force. The Ark Encounter is another nutter project in Kentucky.

The biggest issue is that it's a religious institution, and the government is theoretically secular.
