That wasn't that bad. She mangled it but was live on stage, I'll cut her some slack. As a bonus she kept it short. I got what she was trying to say, though I don't agree with her. Nowhere near as bad as Miss U.S. Americans.

Actually I found her answer to be quite motivating.

Of the 3 billion hours of phone calls the NSA has to listen to every minute, how many of them are discussions from people such as Miss Alabama and her friends.

Protip, most answers given by contestants are not controversial and are meant to appease the judges and increase their chances of winning no matter how they, the contestants, personally feel about the subject.

At least she can string together words to form a coherent sentence, but I don't feel any safer by the surveillance state we're moving towards.  In fact, I feel less safe.

But this is somewhat of a political question and I don't understand why it's relevant to a beauty contest.  What next?  Are they going to ask "What political party are you registered as and why?"

Its' also disturbing that the audience cheered her answer, but a poll (I think Pew, but not 100% sure) I saw yesterday said 56% of people approved of the NSA's actions and only 41% disapproved.

That was actually a pretty solid answer for a beauty pageant contestant.

Consider that most of this young woman's waking hours are spent looking good (working out, eating right), that she had a somewhat cogent response is pretty good.

If you're going to bring out overused quotes at least get them right. "They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.  " is the quote and the debate is what are "essential" liberties and how you define temporary safety.

There is not a single thing (NSA, TSA, or any other SA) that has been done since 9/11 that makes me feel any safer.  The words security theater come to mind.  The fact that I have nothing to hide is immaterial.  We, as a country, have become the parody of how communists treat their citizens in bad 80's films.

Of course it is.  It still doesn't mean that the government can go 1984 on us.  Personally, my favorite quote about freedom comes from a Terry Pratchett novel (who would have thought), and it says "No sane mortal is truly free, because true freedom is so terrible that only the mad or the divine can face it with open eyes."

You have a much higher safety threshold than people who live/work overseas since I've noticed a lot of common sense changes to how things are done along with all the bullshiat.

Sounds like a big waste of time to me. You're more likely to be killed by someone who's texting while driving than you are by a terrorist attack. Hell, it's more likely that you'll die by autoerotic asphyxiation than by terrorism. The whole ooga booga big scary terrorists are coming to get you thing is just boring. You really do have to be an idiot to fear terrorism. Oh, and you'll also more likely die from heat stroke than by a terrorist attack, better crank up the AC!

We had 3 terrorist attacks against US diplomatic facilities when i was in Pakistan another when I was in both Turkey and Yemen. The average American doesn't have much to worry about terrorism but the money we spend to secure our diplomatic facilities and personal overseas has largely been well spent and done a good job at reducing causalities. You really have to be an idiot to think spending money to protect US citizens overseas is a waste.

While I agree that spending money on keeping our citizens safe is a good idea, I probably don't agree with how much money and how much freedom the government seems to think is necessary.  At what point is there a diminishing return on the amount of money, and liberties that the government is taking?

Yes, public speaking can be a mf'er. It's really easy to lose your train of thought, panic and just try to wrap it up ASAP. It often happens as it did here, where you start off strong/confident, then once everyone quiets down and starts listening it's like walking on a tightrope and looking down. I don't know how true it is, but there's an oft-quoted statistic about people being more afraid of public speaking than death.

Perhaps my initial statement was a bit of hyperbole, but not one of those things you mentioned makes me safer.  However, the TSA is a perfect example of not making anyone safer.  The one thing that should have come out of 9/11 regarding travel safety is a locking cockpit door.  Everything else does nothing except inconvenience everyone.  There never would be an identical 9/11 because people on the planes would never let it happen again.  It was something that could have been prevented by banning box cutters, but shampoo served no role in those attacks.

I have made a grand total of one call from Europe to the US, and none from the US to another country.  Yet, the government can (and most likely does) have my Verizon records.  That makes anyone safer, how?  If there was any semblance of reasonable cause it would be better (but probably to me still not acceptable).
