Concrete driveway FTW. I can sit back and relax while my neighbors with asphalt driveways slave away applying black sealer in the hot sun. Then, when I feel like it, after some oil spills on it, I can use pretty much anything I want to clean it, then spray it with the hose to rinse. Most stuff that dissolves oil will dissolve tar and asphalt, too. Why would you use anything other than concrete for a driveway?

I have one only because a friend gave it to me. I don't use it. I use a charcoal grill. Food tastes better when grilled on charcoal, so there is a benefit to using it, even with the tiny bit more effort involved (and I actually enjoy that part, too). What benefit is there of an asphalt driveway vs. a concrete one, however? I really can't think of a single one, aside from slightly better resistance to salt, though properly cured concrete really doesn't have a lot of trouble with that, either. Asphalt driveways absorb oil and get soft, they develop ruts over time, they crack and break up worse than concrete, they serve as a heat reservoir, they're harder to clean, they have to be resealed periodically because of these things. I don't mind extra work to maintain something when there is a clear benefit to using that thing vs. another, lower- maintenance option. But when there is literally no benefit to the harder- to- care for item, what's the point?

Oh, and before you make any other assumptions: I live in a 90- year old house. It doesn't have vinyl siding, and I don't mind painting, because vinyl looks fake. I don't drive newer cars, because even with the extra maintenance, I save a lot of money that way (being a mechanic helps in this, of course!) But again... and I'm willing to learn- what benefit does an asphalt driveway have over a concrete one that justifies the extra maintenance and lower durability?
