Once you know you have them, it's usually too late to just replace the mattress. They get everywhere. In NYC they are even starting to tell people to put borrowed library books in the freezer for three hours when you bring them home because they are spreading around that way, too.

Fair enough.  The wife and I have a suicide pact concerning bedbugs.

gshepnyc: I've known people who have dealt with those awful things and it seems to drive people pretty close to actual madness

In their house?  In the middle of their street?

The federal Environmental Protection Agency says very high, sustained heat can kill bedbugs, but raising the temperature with the thermostat or space heaters won't do the job. It says special equipment is needed.

Actually yes it does work, this moron probably didn't full understand that you just have to heat the interior of the home to a sustained 130 degrees for three hours and you have to treat the ENTIRE home not just keep it one room.

Having dealt with them in the distant past (and STILL having the occasional freakout/worry over the possibility of having them-is that an ancient, dead bedbug? Some other flat thing? OH GOD WHAT WAS IT), "Kill it with fire" is an incredibly tempting option.

gestug: He has money for all those implements to kill Bedbugs, but not money to buy a new mattress

They don't just live in the mattress.

Any nook, cranny, or crevice they can fit into (which is... A LOT. Including: Electronics, Behind power outlets, and IN YOUR SHOES (beneath the sole).)

They are like a demon scourge. And they are immune to most pesticides (probably bringing DDT back wouldn't even help: I believe there was evidence they were developing resistance when it was banned).
