mungo: What is this journalist on about? There are plenty of different characters in the Lego world - My son has lots of smiley characters but also lots of bad guys too - it helps with the stories he makes - plus maybe she needs to actually do  a bit of journalism and discover Lego Friends - a range that's so sickeningly smiley and twee that only 6 year old girls could love it...

My daughter has a bunch of the Lego Friends sets. I think she just likes having girl minifigs. She plays with my son, and so far the girls have been construction workers, scientists, hunters, ninjas, and space explorers. The Lego Friends" boutique" got outfitted with computer equipment and weapons to be a space station on Mars. She told me they left the lipstick at home because they needed more room for food and weapons.

I'm not sure where I was going with that besides "cool story bro".

Whatever it is that you're doing raising your children, keep doing it!!

(and buy them more Legos)

Don't think for a second that because the old figs only had happy faces, we only played with them in happy scenarios. My brother and I would go into all-out war. The only difference is that instead of displaying some honest anger, our yellow-faced space warriors all had that goofy grin.

Glad I grew up in the mid late 60's.  We had Tinker Toys, Lincoln Logs, Bricks, and Erector sets.  Oh and something called playing outside.

/Didn't know what a Lego was.

Legos were something a friend of mine had. There were no characters, just blocks. They were cool for making stuff for G.I. Joes to crash through.

When I was a kid, all we had was the local Surpise Zone.

Oh, how we'd dig for hours for little treasures and trinkets. The best stuff we'd bring home, and if we got enough, we would get a bowl of rice to share. It wasn't all fun and games though. The seagulls where highly territorial and would bite us, and the red bags from the hospital would poke our little hands something fierce. But one magical day I found a piece of cardboard. I put it on my head and pretended I was a starship captian and I had discovered a new land. I laughed and scampered around for hours until my father saw I was no longer collecting shineys and beat me with a cactus.

What are these Legos everyone is talking about?

I'm younger so I grew up with angry LEGOs and they definitely are what made me a sociopath.

Today's LEGO characters are looking increasingly angry and carrying more weapons, indicating an important shift in the way kids play and interact with toys that companies have stopped caring about anything but keeping their shareholders happy.

/THE HORROR!

I started playing with Lego before the mini-figures, or any people for that matter. First they had bigger heads and articulated arms, a whole bigger scale. But no bodies, so you just put them on a column of the 2x2 squares. Then they came out with this little faceless guy with the shoulders and feet, but no arms or legs. When the space men came out, I couldn't have them grinning like psychotic idiots as they engaged in savage combat so I usually turned their heads backwards and put the helmets on so the faces were blank.

Ashyukun: Carn: They won't be destroyed until they start making lego surprise buttsex faces.

There's already at least one that's close- look up the 'Hazmat Guy' collectible minifig...

Oh yeah, there's buttsex coming.

I didn't know there was a Lego figure of Ned Stark.

Sarsin:
Really? I have to say our "happy" Lego figures when I was a kid had a buttload of weapons. We just had to BUILD them. Let's not delusion ourselves that somehow we are more violent today then we were 30 years ago because Lego dudes now have pre-fab blasters and ninja swords.

Yeah... it wasn't hard.  One of those astronaut "telescopes" plus an antenna = pintle mounted Browning .50.  A lot of my Lego creations had those...

As much as I generally agree... I wouldn't buy Brickarms for kids.  1) they're not cheap, 2) they're just a little too militaristic, 3) I'd have to share.

I just dug up some Lego guys from my mother's basement for my nephew.  All of them smile.  But let's be honest; when killing a man, it's best to put on a happy face.

I remember buying that ship at Toys 'R Us in the 90's.  Spent like $120 of my hard earned money when I was like 10 maybe.  So many adventures.

They only won because Loc Blocs were far less durable, and less pointy.

LEGO THREAD!

I received the space missile command for Christmas in 1978. The minifigs had the original smiley face. Here are my recalled narratives:

1. Mutiny. The whites think we should do it this way; the reds think we should do it that way.

2. Cataclysm. We were not expecting that solar burst that is frying us. Aaaaarghhh.

They smiled through it; but I knew different.

These days it's trendy to claim you "naturally" have an angry resting face.  It's catching on to the Lego people too.
