I live in Manhattan and had my home wrecked by Sandy. When I heard that Senators and Representatives were voting against aid to my area because it was 'pork' I was furious.

Now when a disaster hits Oklahoma, one of the places in the nation where the politicians didn't want to help New York and New Jersey are located, I feel nothing but compassion and a desire to help these people. They should get immediate aid and I frankly don't care if I have to pay some extra taxes next year or whenever to make sure they're taken care of.

What is wrong with me?

If by "professional" you mean "I draw a paycheck for this", then I suppose you're right. They are paid. Then again, so are some of the storm-chasers. ...but whether they get paid or not, they're not really contributing much to the situation at hand.

If you're driving around in a van documenting the disaster and not negatively impacting the cleanup or the rescue, then you are doing exactly what is expected of you in the situation. And if you think for a second that the storm chasers aren't contributing to the event, you are more clueless than you let on. Where in the hell do you think that the dispatchers get their second-to-second information from?

Staggering incompetence on the matter. Unbelievable.

I don't know.. Something tells me they might have been a bit smarter about it. Most Americans have no relation to the earth whatsoever. I'm one of them. I love a good storm but I have no idea what differentiates one from the other. I go outside with my Kindle and sit on my porch while watching the clouds roll in without a clue. I would imagine the natives were a bit better keyed into what their environment was doing than we might give them credit for. We wait for the news to tell us whats up, when the natives ruled that territory had a culture built upon the "weather spirits." We have Chad Handipants on News at 6. For the Native American a tornado was worshiped more than feared.

Most of them don't even have cars much less the money to get out of the area. Much less the money to feed their kids when they did get to some place they had no hope whatsoever to afford.

Just realized they are saying this one was over 2 miles wide. Joplin 2011 was 1 mile (158 dead in an F5). Tuscaloosa 2011 was 1.5 (64 dead in F4). Moore 1999 was 1 mile (41 dead in F5)

Excellent work. You've successfully argued the analogy *and* missed the point entirely.
*Basements* and *shelters* already exist and improve outcomes. Despite the magical status of tornadoes as being composed of "wind" and being "not hurricanes".
So we're simply not talking about a binary "can anything be done or not", because things are already done and are effective. We're talking about the scale of "to what extent is more feasible/economical".

Is *stopping* a tornado feasible? Very probably not. Even if it were possible, it would almost certainly be uneconomical.
But that doesn't mean there is no structure that can be built that might further improve outcomes.

You're attempting to use the unlikelihood of a 'perfect'/total solution to disprove the existence of *any* potential improvement.
And that's as silly as saying sea walls would do 'nothing' against a hurricane or, (if you're too hung up on the "wind isn't water" issue) it's like saying we might as well go back to reading animal entrails to find out if Billy is going to beat his fever and survive the winter -- modern medicine can't defeat death itself, so why bother?

/ I'm well aware that tornadoes are *also* not fevers, so you can spare us all that one.

You. Can't. The funnel is the focus of rotation of a ten-mile high wall of rotation. It is the single point of the fastest winds and rotation of the storm. The power involved cannot be prevented by engineering, but only endured. There is no way- and I cannot stress that enough -to slow it down, to nudge it, or to disrupt it. Few buildings can withstand a strong (EF3, some EF4) tornadoes, and incredibly few can withstand anything stronger; it is a matter of endurance. Underground shelters are not always possible due to the high water table. I know that's a problem here in N Texas. It's not that people just forgot about that being an option. Every school does tornado drills at least twice a year.

Holy fark...

We don't have the tech to pinpoint certain areas like hurricanes. We knew there was a big risk for Oklahoma but there's no way right now to know where. Unless you want to evacuate hundreds if not thousands of square miles, having people concentrated in the danger zone could actually be a bad thing if that's where the tornado decides to hit.

It's a formation in the cloud system that is a very strong indicator of upper rotation in the clouds that could turn into a funnel cloud. It looks like a pirate hook shape. You tend to see them on radar in red and yellow.

Tornadoes are weird because they rarely occur in the rain, if ever. In my experience the rain will die and it gets really quiet, and the sky turns a really sickly greenish color. You can hear it coming for a mile too, like a weird freight train horn or the sound when you blow over the mouth of a soda bottle. I guess that's why they say the calm before the storm.

That's my only comfort right now. I just hope all those babies are ok. I can't even imagine.

Tinker AFB was once hit by tornadoes twice in one week.

I believe that was some sort of record for most frequent repeat tornadic touchdowns. Today may be breaking that record. Geez.

And to answer your question, there are lots of places in OK that are hit repeatedly. There are infamous tornadoes from Edmond, Moore, Tuttle, and OKC proper. There's a reason that the meteorology department at OU is world-renowned.

I lived in Norman when I was a kid for exactly 6 weeks. I remember epic floods and frogs falling from the sky, I shiat you not, it was like a scene from Magnolia. OK has crazy stupid weather.

It's large. Its destructive power remains to be assessed. But generally, huge tornadoes are also very destructive when they hit a populated area, which this one is. It's going through an area full of houses, businesses, you name it. It's not too far west of Tinker AFB.

Not to pick nits or take away from the severity of the situation but they don't assign an EF number until they can look at the damage path. The visual size or appearance of a tornado doesn't factor in. It's the mess it makes that counts.

In any case, got my fingers crossed for everybody up there. Keep your heads down.
