I happen to have purchased one of the portable jammers online a few months ago.

When Iron Man 3 premiered, it was a packed house. Got there an hour early just to make sure I got a good seat and the theater filled up real fast 10 minutes later. Looking around, I see at least half of the people in the theater were using their smartphones. A majority of those folks turn their brightness levels of their screens down which was a welcome relief....except this overweight lady sitting in the row in front of me and just two seats to the left. Her screen brightness is up on full and she is texting away..with the sound volume maxed.

So the pre-movie Marcus theater intro pops up and everyone puts away their phones, except this woman who puts down her phone but then picks it up to text right up to the start of the movie.

About 10 minutes in, she starts to text away again. Her husband doesn't say anything, he just puts up his right hand to shield his eyes from the light. I'm sick of it so I reach into my coat pocket (it was 40 degrees outside in my neck of the woods) and turn on my jammer.

Oh it was so nice to see this lady slapping her phone in frustration (as if that would help) as her signal was lost. She finally got out of her seat and walked (waddled?) out of the theater never to return back to the movie. I left the jammer on until the final scene played after the credits then turned it off and left.

I guess she figured that the theater was at fault as she was yelling at the movie theater manager (I assume it was the manager as he was wearing a business suit with a theater name badge pinned to his jacket. All the other employees were in white shirts, black pants, and black ties).

First time I every used my jammer in public and I certainly will use it when I go to Fast 6 and Star Trek this weekend.

I farking hate people so much. Honestly, I'm more and more convinced that there's a sizable percentage of the population that simply lacks the maturity or mental capacity to simultaneously own a cell phone and behave as a participant in civilized society. It's like watching restless, undisciplined children at a restaurant with their parents - these 'adults' are utterly incapable of sitting still and focusing on the task at hand. I won't even go into the soaring estimation of relative worth that people have about themselves - "my 'business' here on my cell phone is so important that it outweighs the entire purpose of everyone else's presence in the room." And utterly incapable of accepting any level of correction in anything resembling dignified fashion. Like a petulant, impertinent little child.

I find myself thinking about this article all the time.

If you want to get technical, the performance was the property of those who paid for it, and the woman and her group were maliciously destroying it for the other attendees. Theft of services might be a good countersuit, in addition to the assault charge.

I'm 63. I've noticed, over the years, that one huge problem we have as a society, a problem that is leading to the gradual decline of society - is an increasing unwillingness of people to "call" other people on offensive behavior. A certain amount of this is due to fear of immediate or delayed reprisal by the offending party or the offending party's friends.

Lines, for example. Does anyone other than me honor that concept anymore? Even though we are no longer homeless, things are still tight and we get food at a couple of local churches, and from the city. Invariably there are an increasingly large number of people who think nothing of arriving at the last minute and barging into line near or at the front. Both the people running the event and the people already in line often seem to have a reticence for complaining about this. I'm pretty sure of the reason, but I'd like to hear some other opinions, first.

The difference is that the self-important cock on the phone is distracting everyone else within eye or ear-shot while almost no one would realize that Marcus's jammer is in use. Most people wouldn't even realize it was a jammer and believe it to be bad reception or a glitch. I'll take a theatre full of folks like Marcus over a theater full of people using their smartphones during the movie.

I never understood that argument. I work with doctos and every single on of them use pagers for emergencies. So assuming a doctor was at a theater and was inconsiderate enough to not have vibrate on, it would be a quick beep and they would get up and leave.

If a doctor is on their cell phone (especially in public) it is almost certainly not an emergency.

Back in grad school I once had a student answer a phone during an exam and start talking. In a conversational tone. During. An. Exam. As if it's perfectly normal to take calls while writing exams.
I grabbed the phone and tossed it to the front where it shattered on the floor.

You also "chose" to have the children in the first place. That means you should be given 3 options:

1. Stay home.
2. Put the phone away and get a sitter you trust enough to handle problems for a few hours wihtout your input.
3. Use your phone for any reason while sitting in the theatre and get instantly ejected.

Looking at your phone even ONCE during a movie or perfromance is once too often. Grownups should be able to plan and prepare beter than that.

Wife and I went to a symphony performance where you were required to check your cell phone before admittance. No checky, no admitty. Wife was a bit put out by it, but I kind of liked the idea.

I get so darn tired of rude folks using cells where they're not supposed to and figuring that it's their right to do so.

My elderly mother used to complain that one 'important' guy in her church used to ignore the preachers request to turn off all cells in the chapel and would get calls during the sermon and answer them.

There are powerful jammers available for commercial use by stores, but few actually use them, apparently afraid they might loose business. Portable jammers are available also, that fit in your pocket, but technically they're illegal. (A real fast and under the table movement apparently by cell companies and congress.) Though, you can still get them from the Internet.

I would think that places like that dinner theater would install the more powerful jammers for the people who are going to inevitably ignore the rules.

The theater was even nice enough to rewind the film to before his call. When the movie was over a group of people walked me to my car which was nice even though I was carrying a concealed weapon. He was waiting for me outside, but seeing all the people around me he turned around and walked away.

Here's a true story, since it's story time.

A couple months ago my brother and our wives and I went to a movie, and some guy a row ahead of us and a couple seats over is using his phone as the movie starts. Not the previews, the actual movie. So a few of us, myself included try politely asking him in a normal voice to turn it off. The usual, we're in public and don't want to make a scene with a stranger sort of thing. It doesn't work. The guy just ignores us, and I'm pretty sure he could hear us. Certainly I could hear everyone else. So my brother yells, in exactly the same tone of voice as when his dog needs to pay attention, "TURN OFF THE D***ED PHONE!" The guy instantly hunches over like he's about to be attacked and turns off the phone. My brother gets a short round of applause.

I guess you had to be there.

Because blocking potentially life saving calls is more important than your "right" to not be annoyed.

First, nearly all portable jammers have a button that needs to be held down to work. Only a few have an on/off switch. If you are afraid of an attack on the theater and someone who has a jammer, they are killed and it is left on, you can untwist your panties now.

Portable jammers have a coverage area of 10-25 feet (some are larger, up to 70ft, but they are not easily hidden, can be noisy as they have internal fans to cool them, and get hot). A jammer in the theater room next to you isn't going to affect you.

When a jammer is on, you will never know unless you look at your phone and see your reception bars are gone. Then again, all the movie theaters I go to the cell reception drops from full bars outside of the theater building to 2-3 bars inside so most folks may think it's just the theater room they are in. In fact, you probably have had your phone jammed at one point or another and never knew it.

If you feel that you just can not be out of touch for 2 hours at a theater, then stay home and rent the DVD. You talk as loud as you want, text away, and check your phone as often as you want.

Off topic:
There is a local, upscale restaurant that requires patrons check their cellphones. If you get a call, the staff will inform you and you have the option of going outside or ignoring the call. If you sneak your cell into the restaurant and it goes off or they see you use it, you are asked to pay your bill and leave (if you have food, they box it up for you) and you are banned for 1 month. Next offense is 6 months. Third offense and you are banned for a year. (Side note: Patrons must be 21 or over. Children must be 14 or older.) It is a fairly popular place to go if you are on a date or meeting with important clients.

I have a feeling you probably would have an issue with such a place as well.

I would agree with that speculation as long as stir up in your opinion does not imply create and instead means escalate since he was the one that created the conflict by becoming hostile in response to an extremely polite request made in a non-confrontational tone. I don't know how thuggish I was considering when he resumed his conversation there was references to doing me bodily harm. At that time in my life though I reacted forcefully to confrontation so I guess I would consider my reaction to be extreme, but since it was a reaction I wouldn't consider it thuggish in nature since that would imply that I was forcing my will on others who were not in conflict with me.

Wow you must feel really silly after reading my second post. I had a concealed weapon on me, because I was employed as an investigator at the time and was required by my employer to be armed at all times. I didn't have a permit I had a badge which requires a lot more training with the firearm than a permit. You should also notice that I never went for my sidearm and made sure to disable the use of his hand from reaching for a firearm had he had one.

On your statement about others being armed feeling like Billy bad ass I bet there are people and or their families that were at the theater in Denver who wish there was some armed members attending. People who believe making guns illegal will remove them from criminals are regrettable delusional.

One of my college professors had a rule, stated at the beginning of the semester: you get one free pass with your cellphone. After that each time it rings during class time she took one half point off the letter grade of the next test (b to b-), and if she saw you talking or texting during class it would count for one half off the letter grade for the entire semester.
I heard one phone go off the entire 16 weeks of class. The first few minutes of each period were spent putting phones on vibrate or shutting them off.

It was glorious.

I was with you until the part about the concealed weapon. I thought one of your responsibilities when carrying was to remain non confrontational, especially about relatively trivial matters... almost sounds like you're trying to get in a situation where you can shoot someone.

No, they're not so important that the person MUST rush out of the theater that very second, and if they WERE, then that person shouldn't BE in the theater. If you cannot turn your phone off and sit quietly like a civilized human being, then DO NOT GO.

The self-important person here isn't the person with the jammer: it's the person who left their cell phone ringer. Frankly, you're projecting your own self-importance on the very people who don't want to tolerate yours.

In an ideal world, a higher authority would deal with ghetto thug x, however since everyone is so farking afraid of being sued or injured, these scumbags get by with doing whatever they want without fear of repercussion and at everyone else's expense. Checking one's phone with the house manager is not only safe as houses, but in the event that you ARE called away from your seat for a legit emergency, but in these times when so few physicians and similar must-be-reachable folks don't know to do that and instead disrupt the play, most house managers will comp you and whomever you were with a ticket for a subsequent performance if you have to leave.

My family doctor always got to see every show in town at least once and occasionally one-and-a-half times based on this system. Not only was it easier to get ahold of her and much less likely to annoy other patrons, but on the two occasions when there was a medical emergency backstage, the house manager was able to get to a doctor immediately and in one case, an actor's life was saved. So after that, Doc always had a free subscription for that company's whole season and was frequently allowed to watch dress rehearsals.

If you're a person who must be reachable and love the theater, checking your phone with the house manager is the way to go.

I was in a packed movie once on opening night and the guy next to me gets a call in the middle of the movie. This person did have his phone on vibrate, but he answered the call with a "Yo girl whats up." And then proceeded to talk with her. I could tell be the nature of the conversation that this was not an emergency situation so I leaned over and said "Your conversation during the movie is upsetting those around you could you please call her back later or leave the movie?" his reply was consistent with his intelligence and respect for others "Fark you mother Farker!" So I grabbed the phone out of his hand and dumped it into his fountain drink that was conveniently not covered by a lid, because he had removed the lid to pour cheap vodka in it. All those around me started clapping and thanking me which must have angered him even more, because he took a swing at me which I easily dodged. I grabbed his arm forced it behind and up his back walked him down the row and into the wall then down and out the emergency exit. When I turned around I think everyone was clapping and cheering. The theater was even nice enough to rewind the film to before his call. When the movie was over a group of people walked me to my car which was nice even though I was carrying a concealed weapon. He was waiting for me outside, but seeing all the people around me he turned around and walked away.

and you carry a concealed weapon and he carries one and shots are fired over this incident. why do people who carry a concealed weapon consider themselves to be billy badass. you aren't. you are a punk with a few hundred dollars who bought a permit so you hope you can be the bully. the haha i got a gun and the guy i think is bad is going to get it but not innocent bystanders reasoning. almost any situation where a private citizen says i must carry a gun can easily be flagged as bullshiate in the first world. you are joe blow going to the movies and think you need a gun-society is weakened by people like you.

I've never seen someone use a phone during a movie, before the movie I've seen it and I even play games on my phone before it starts but once the movie goes I'm more interested in the movie than the people around me so who really cares if someone is playing with their phone.

I have, and it's farking annoying as hell. Even "just" googling something? that screen lights up like a supernova, ffs.

Looking around, I see at least half of the people in the theater were using their smartphones. A majority of those folks turn their brightness levels of their screens down which was a welcome relief....except this overweight lady sitting in the row in front of me and just two seats to the left. Her screen brightness is up on full and she is texting away..with the sound volume maxed.

So the pre-movie Marcus theater intro pops up and everyone puts away their phones, except this woman who puts down her phone but then picks it up to text right up to the start of the movie.

About 10 minutes in, she starts to text away again. Her husband doesn't say anything, he just puts up his right hand to shield his eyes from the light. I'm sick of it so I reach into my coat pocket (it was 40 degrees outside in my neck of the woods) and turn on my jammer.

Oh it was so nice to see this lady slapping her phone in frustration (as if that would help) as her signal was lost. She finally got out of her seat and walked (waddled?) out of the theater never to return back to the movie. I left the jammer on until the final scene played after the credits then turned it off and left.

I guess she figured that the theater was at fault as she was yelling at the movie theater manager (I assume it was the manager as he was wearing a business suit with a theater name badge pinned to his jacket. All the other employees were in white shirts, black pants, and black ties).

First time I every used my jammer in public and I certainly will use it when I go to Fast 6 and Star Trek this weekend.

I saw IM3 last weekend- right as the movie started, a burly (sounding) dude from the back of the theater shouts, "If I see one cell phone light up before the credits are OVER, I will personally jam that phone down your throat."

2/3rds of the theater erupted in applause. The other third looked annoyed.

But not a'one of 'em lit up. Had I seen who the dude was, I would have handed him a $10 and told him to buy a beer on me.

No, those regulations are designed so that everyone (the general public) is able to share in a public resource (the RF spectrum) that is accessible to only one person at a time.

You say "cell phone interests" like they're some sinister group. For sure, the telecoms make money off of the cell phone business, but so does everyone else. My grandfather has this great story where is car broke down on the middle of the interstate in bumfark nowhere and he ended up sleeping in his car overnight before someone found him. We couldn't have cell phones without some regulation of the RF spectrum, whether its self-imposed by the industry or imposed by the government.

And yeah, when you use a jammer you're declaring that you're more important than everyone else around you. You don't have to be a doctor to have an important phone call- it could be some guy's wife going into labor or someone's kid who got stuck at school, both are important enough to warrant immediate attention. I'm not excusing poor etiquette, but using a jammer negatively impacts that person who is being rude, but also everyone else who was polite enough to put their device on vibrate.

WTF are you doing in a play (or other non-cell friendly environment) if your wife is in labor or your kid is at school?

Cell companies get involved with tracking illegal jammers too, not just the FCC. Your problem will come when people start complaining that their phones aren't working to Verizon or Sprint or whoever and they start putting two and two together and find out someone is walking around with a jamming device. From that point agents will start moving around with a detector and if you keep using it getting caught is a matter of when rather than if.

That said, unless you're using it a lot occasional drops would probably be written off as oddities.

You also have to bear in mind that as a jammer user you are, in fact, an even bigger dickhead than the person being jammed. The odds you're going to block legitimate traffic in non-restricted areas is very high. Not exactly on the side of the good and righteous if you're blocking one stupid kid from texting in a movie while you're also blocking 20 perfectly normal people from making legitimate, non-interrupting calls the offices two rooms over.

It looks like FCC enforcement is primarily against fixed locations and the sellers of the devices. Someone using a battery powered pocket jammer will be very hard to triangulate, since most of the units need a button held down in order to transmit their signal. And with only two enforcement actions listed in all of 2013, it's not like they're putting in a lot of effort.

I know if I were a teacher / professor I'd carry one of those damn jammers in class every day. When the hell did kids get so rude? I can generally manage to not fark around during class, but these youngsters all around me are just texting away the entire class. I'm wondering why they even bother coming.

I doubt the police much care, and unless someone is really abusing their jammer, I very much doubt the FCC is going to be called in for the once-in-a-blue-moon jamming that takes place for 1-2 hours at a movie theater in a small city in the mid-west.

The theater comes very close to false imprisonment according to his version of the story.

You can detain someone after a crime is committed while the police are called. Same way mall security can detain shoplifters without being actual police officers.

Having an LED screen blind you during the performance is distracting. It is pretty hard to NOT look when you are in a dim theater and people insist on farking texting or using their phones while in the theater. If it is so farking important you have to do that RIGHT then, you should step out - or you shouldn't even farking be there in the first place if your phone is more interesting than what is going on. Girls are the worst about that. No matter where they are, or whose company they are in they get out their phones and dick around on it. Could you imagine how pissed in turn the ladies would be if us men decided to check ESPN scores, play some games, and NOT listen to what they have to say? Hah!

More and more I would like theaters to have cell phone jamming devices active during performances , or even giant Faraday cages

It's for this reason I really want to visit the Alamo Draft House to see a movie at some point. They tell you they have zero tolerance for this shiat, and they actually mean it. They will throw your ass out for using your cell phone during a movie.
