 Anyway, like I was sayin', cicadas is the fruit of the land. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, cicada-kabobs, cicada creole, cicada gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple cicada , lemon cicada,coconut cicada, pepper cicada, cicada soup, cicada stew, cicada salad, cicada and potatoes, cicada burger, cicada sandwich. That- that's about it.

I've eaten gnats, probably some flies, something crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside, and something bitey. You get that at freeway speeds on two wheels, not from a kitchen.

I had some wonderful cornbread type item in Baja many, many years back that had a nice, peppery bite to it. I thought it was some odd type of pepper I was seeing on and inside my noms. Nope. As it turned out, it was "roe of the fly". Not only that, they put them in there on purpose. I found this out mid-bite, btw. My reaction was pretty much confusion. My taste buds were saying "nommy nommy nommy! we're gonna eat this!" and doing a little taste bud happy dance (well, you get the idea) and my brain was screaming in horror and telling me "spititoutspititoutohgodsspititout!!!".

Yeah, I ate the rest of it. Cuz ya know what? It was tasty. I don't know that I would have tried it if I knew beforehand that was fly eggs and not pepper. Still, when I read about people eating bugs, either as part of their cultural tradition or because they're total freakazoids (scientists), it doesn't phase me anymore. I actually start wondering if there's a way to disguise the appearance of said bug food item allegedly tasty thing so I can try it without my brain rebelling too terribly much. The old cook's adage "you eat with your eyes first" is very true, which is why I spend so much time "dressing" my plates - to make the food look just as lovely as it tastes. I can't imagine how you would make a cicada look lovely, though. I may have to take a pass on this rare feasting opportunity no matter how tempted I am to try it.

My trainer at the gym went to culinary school in Switzerland, and had been in the Peace Corps so he's been many unusual places and eaten many odd things.  I asked him once if there's anything he doesn't like.  I was thinking more like "cauliflower" or "green peppers".  Like me.  He said, "well... there are some insects I don't like."  .... DUDE!!!  He told me he once ate some sort of red ants out of a tree in Cambodia, among other stories.  He's cooked dinner for me, and thankfully it's been insect-free.  Also, cauliflower-free.

I had a hard enough time getting used to eating mud bugs, I mean crawdads, crayfish, whatever.  Now I'm supposed to eat REAL bugs?!?

Just moved back to the West Coast from Chicago.

Besides the seasonal Cicada's, we had the seasonal ones. I was shocked at the size of their shells that hung on our building when they molted.

I suppose I could envision cooking and eating them. But until Trader Joe's carries them covered in Sea Salt and Lavender, how will I know that it's really cool to consume them?

Tabletop: I DNRTFA, but the cicada expert on NPR said there was some evidence that cicadas are mercury accumulators, like tuna. A little googling turned up http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2004/05/040531214618.htm, I don't know how reliable a source science daily is, and I DNRTFA either.

Well, you only get to eat them every 17 years, so there's that
