Very rarely do I agree with the use of the 'Hero' tag.

This is one of those rare times.

Also, to the snide bastards commenting on how not all cops are bastards...This is the very epitome of what cops 'should' be like.  There's no violence here, no enforcing of authority, no reprimanding, no handcuffs, no arresting.

This is a cop who has talked HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE down from committing suicide.  Hundreds of lives.

If all cops cared like this guy, the reputation of the stereotypical cop as a power-drunk bully wouldn't exist.

Bravo to these cops who do this job.

Having lost a 24 year old step son to suicide I wished there would have been someone to talk to him and help him.

I guess towards the end he, my stepson realized something...authorities told us that it looked like he tried to back out but it was to late.

The hardest part was I was the first notifed and I had to go with a police officer and get my wife from work and tell her the news.....hardest thing I ever had to do.....ever.

High levels of cocaine and alcohol and a very poor decision and a friend who laughed off his call at the end and now  he's gone... he was a great kid...great job...great girlfriend......................

If you know someone who needs help please do what you have to do to get them help....listen.....my son confided to his friends the last few weeks of his life that things weren't right in his head....they all took it as a joke....listen.

Suicide ain't painless to the survivors.....I needed to do this...sorry.

Great story. Both of these men... and the rest of us, can book  this as "being a human being".

My dad was a cop in the East Bay for over 30 years. His entire career was in the police department of the city we lived in. He died in February of cancer.

He would have loved this story. Thanks, Subby.. I miss him terribly but this story made me smile.

HaveBeerWillTravel: But remember, all cops are dicks.

Well, I do think some of them go into law enforcement for the wrong reasons. Obviously, the police officer in this article is not one of them...

I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend,
You could cut ties with all the lies,
That you've been living in,
And if you do not want to see me again,
I would understand

Shadowtag: fnordfocus: puffy999: "YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE LOTS, AND LOTS, AND LOTS OF SEX! Seriously, do you want to miss out on that?!"

In prison on an attempted suicide sentence?

Not everyone considers that to be a good thing.

I don't think we actually prosecute for that. It's one of those things that exist in theory but not in real life. Like sex for a Farker.

Yea, generally you just get taken to a mental health ward and then owe a hospital thousands of dollars.

Watch "The Bridge", it's a 2006 documentary about the large amount of suicides that occur at the Golden Gate bridge.  Very enlightening in a morose kind of way.  Apparently the Golden Gate bridge is the most popular place in the world to off yourself.

Good story. Reminds me of that bit at the end of 'Amazing':

"So from all of us at Aerosmith to all of you out there, wherever you are, remember: the light at the end of the tunnel may be you. Good night."
