J. Frank Parnell: MylesHeartVodak: Only an asshole makes a joke about stealing tips. When you reach into a tip jar "to make a joke," it is not funny at all. Watch how serious someone gets when you "joke" about stealing their primary source of income. The guy made another "joke" about stabbing someone with a butter knife.

The employees weren't the ones who had a problem with anything, it was the 'observers'. For all we know he could have had friends who were working there.

From the sounds of the article, these 'observers' saw him poking at a tip with a butter knife and went all "OMG he's trying to steal it". There's no mention of him verbally threatening anyone with a butter knife, either, and i'm pretty sure they'd love to use a quote if he did.

"Witnesses spotted the 20-year-old man trying to take the tip money left behind on tables. When he was confronted, he grabbed a butter knife and threatened an employee with it, Schroeder said."

The knife was not in his hand until after he was confronted about taking the tip money.  Only when he was called out on his stealing did he pick up the knife and threaten someone with it.

Seems the threatened employee would have vouched  for his buddy if it was a joke.  If they weren't buddies it was no joke.

What I don't get is why the customers threw him out and had to hold the door closed to keep him from re-entering the restaurant.
