What is SME?

Start rant: I don't mind being sent meeting requests via Outlook.  What I can't stand is when people book meetings in Outlook without asking if I'm available or able to participate.  End rant.

A SME is a Subject Matter Expert, the person who knows the most about something. A SMEGAL is a Subject Matter Expert who is Going to Arrest Logic the person who is going to fark up your project and/or steal the glory, if it succeeds despite their hinderance.
