You guys are delusional.  They just got handed over FOURTY YEARS worth of wages.  They dont ever have to work another day in their lives if they maintain their current life style.

I'd rather not get shot at. You act as though they hit some sort of lottery, while neither died...I'd be shocked if one or both didn't have ongoing pain or medical problems related to this. Not to mention the trauma of getting shot the fark up like that by the cops.

Yeah, that sure as shiat would not be worth a lousy 2.2 mil to me, especially when you consider what's left AFTER doctor's bills and attorney's fees and taxes, and other expenses.


With even one million dollars I could eliminate any debts I owe, support my family while maintaining my current lifestyle, create a financial plan that would actually allow me to increase the amount of cash I have each year and never work another day in my life. I don't see why everyone thinks that part is so mystifying. This ain't black magic. If it's a cost of living thing, well, move.

As for the actual amount paid - totally inadequate. I get why the older woman would not want to tie herself up in litigation until they say she died but 4 million dollars is a ridiculous settlement for what happened. I'd say more than 10 but less than 20 million would be more appropriate, but I admit I'm just making those numbers up because it sound nice. I doubt a lawyer would have any trouble making a compelling argument for it, though.

Long story short, ladies got more than enough money if it's just money but not nearly enough money if it's compensation for the wrong perpetrated upon them.

You're kidding, right? I think a form letter off of a DIY legal forms website could accomplish pretty much the same thing in a slam-dunk case like this.

If that doesn't work, then you get a lawyer. A cheap one.

The shooting range I go to is regularly visited by cops. It is truly frightening how BAD some of them are at shooting. I mean "lucky if they manage to hit the ground with their brass" bad. (some of them)

It really boggles my mind. If I had a job where my life could depend on my gun skills I would sure as shiat practice like crazy. These guys just show up when it's time to re qualify then practice just enough to squeak by.

CSB Time:

My buddy and I were shooting a 10 inch plate with our revolvers. The plate makes a nice clank sound when you hit it with a 38 special or 357 mag.  A cop shows up with his AR-15 and asks if he can shoot the plate. We were like "Sure! Go for it".  No exaggeration he was hitting it 50% of the time max.

When the cop stops to reload my buddy grabs his S&W 686 revolver  and proceeds to ring the gong 6 out of six off-hand. The cop wouldn't even look at us after that.

Assuming the "suspects" ducked down, a cop firing from the rear of the vehicle would have to shoot through several layers of metal. The tailgate is 2 layers, then there is the rear of the cab which is 1 or two layers.

Well given the cops pumped more than 100 ROUNDS into the vehicle, that works out to about $42,000 per.   Which is reasonable given it was a woman and her 76 YEAR OLD MOTHER and they were only trying to deliver the morning paper when Officer TriggerHappy McGee and his merry companions opened up on them.

What's truly sad is the women will get their money.  The La Taxpayers will foot the bill, and NO ONE involved int he shooting  will be fired or even have so much as a stern glance thrown thier way for their criminally reckless behavior


Wasn't the truck the wrong color too?  I thought I read that the dude's truck was white and not blue...

Second, this bombing was (a) amateurish, and (b) only the first one.  Now that the LEO community responded to this homemade glorified firecracker by rolling out EVERY SINGLE COP in a 100-mile radius, shutting down a major city for 36 hours, and conducting a door-to-door search (that yielded precisely zero, considering the suspect had already slipped the perimeter, after he slipped an 80-car shooting scene) ...

how are they going to respond to the next one?

Do the same thing?  Will the government really pay 8,000 LEOs their union-mandated triple time and hazardous duty pay every time a pressure cooker asplodes?  Shut down an entire urban economy for 2 days?  Three?  A week?

This response was all about making a Show of Force.  Great.  They caught a wounded teenager who had to rob a 7-Eleven to get pocket money.

The next Show of Force will be especially entertaining.  And twice as expensive.  I'll be disappointed if it doesn't at least involve a parade of armored vehicles and stormtroopers.

Well I'm personally a small business owner, so I'd probably just expand my business and buy some other businesses.  If I was a salary worker and I had $2m drop on my lap?  Rental properties.  I'd either buy two or three commercial properties, or id buy a whole mess of residential properties and contract out the management/upkeep.

You'd get a nice monthly income stream, and with $2m in equity you could get any loan in the world you want, so you could even turn it into a business and leverage the equity to acquire more properties etc etc.

Capital sure is a powerful thing in a capitalist society.

the women's lawyers.  This kinds of work is usually done on a contingency basis, meaning if you don't win they lawyer doesn't get paid. But if you do win, he gets a percentage of the settlement, typically 25-30%   When you don't have the upfront cash to pay a lawyer their hourly fee, this is the kind of arrangement you typically make.  And while sometimes the lawyer gets a big payday for very little work, those theoretically fund the cases where he puts in tons of work and then loses so doesn;t see dime one.

Yep. The alternative is that poor people don't get legal representation for civil actions. And the insurance lobby would  looooovethat.

That's true, but the nature of this case in particular, where the guilty party already publicly admitted wrongdoing, you really (as the victim) should have the presence of mind to negotiate this down to something more manageable given the expected size of the settlement, like 10-15%.  That's still 420,000 or 640,000, a considerable chunk of change for a couple of sternly worded letters, and it leaves the victims themselves with at least 500,000 more than they normally would have gotten.  A cool half-mil will fund a lot of losing cases.

I don't go in for outrage. It's bad for the skin.

But, look, tell me exactly how my prediction of Escalating Militarized Responses is off-base.  Consider the following scenario:

1. Some other deranged loser decides to make an even bigger homemade pressure cooker bomb.  If you hadn't noticed, the supply of deranged losers is effectively infinite.

2. Boom + lots of TV cameras.

3.  The city government where this occurs (oh, let's say it's .... Los Angeles, just for fun) feels the need to respond.  The magnitude of this bomb is equal to or greater than the Boston Marathon one.  Like Boston, the perpetrator is presumed to be alive and on the loose.

4.  The LA government decides to make a more measured response than Boston did, so they make the decision to roll out about 50-75% of the number of stormtroopers that Boston did.  Search door-to-door?  Pffft!  We'll just increase our usual patrols instead.  Put the whole city on lockdown?  No way!  People have yoga classes to attend.

5.  Three or four days go by, and the perpetrator has still not been caught.  However, the citizens of LA and America wait patiently, fully appreciating the measured, reasonable police response to the bombing, despite the lack of apparent progress in the manhunt.

Do you really see that happening?  Please.

The response to the next terror bombing will make the Dorner manhunt look like an episode of Cops.

He was fired after complaining about excessive force in the LAPD.   This incident simply proves he was right,   Did they need to shut him up for some reason?

I don't know it all either, but I assume it would be listed as 1099" income at retail. I believe the FEDERAL tax rate for that is over 25%, not to mention CA. So, you're "giving" me a truck that you're making me turn around and pay the government probably 30% retail for. That may be how the law works, but it's pretty stupid. If I get the truck as part of a settlement, then I would think the actual damage should deduct (down to 0) any income incurred by compensation for those damages.

tl;dr: I'd be pissed, too, and for good reason.

It CAN work that way...flip side, you get a case that ISN'T front page news nationwide, the county/city/whatever doesn't want to settle, and you spend ten YEARS working on it, to settle for half that amount the day before trial; meanwhile your clients are living in a trailer on disability...

From the government's point of view, they may feel they got off cheap; a jury COULD have awarded tens of millions at the end of the day.  Or, or course...nothing.  I mean, the cops wouldn't have shot them for no reason, right?

/yes, it's kind of a crapshoot
