skullkrusher: Lord and Taylor... Zachary Taylor was our 12th President. Taylor was a famous army leader. Dick Armey was a leader of FreedomWorks. FreedomWorks is a powerful tea party organization.... Do the math. Can't make this stuff up, folks.

If a dick army was chasing me I'd run like farking fast as not to get tea-bagged.

mekki: Haliburton Cummings: you "Americans" all descend from the upchuck the rest of Europe didn't want and you stayed here by virtue of genocide. You are all immigrunts. stfu.

Please. No, we are descended from people who realized that "home" was a rat infested dump and had sense enough to get off our butts and move.

Can't argue on the genocide part though...considering all the immigrants came from countries where invading each others' borders was a hobby. A bloody hobby. But a hobby none the less.

Speak for yourself:

I'm of Irish, Cherokee, and Melungeon extraction (the latter being essentially an Appalachian metis community with Irish, Cherokee, and African-American ancestry...who generally passed as being the descendants of Portugese for a time).

A goodly chunk of my ancestors (all of whom arrived before the Potato Famine) may well have arrived to get the fark away from Ollie Cromwell et al and the ongoing persecution of Irish for being Entirely Too Damn Catholic (in Colonial times, there were literal progroms being conducted against Irish Catholics, and it's a persistent legend that (as far as Scottish folks go) that some of Bonnie Prince Charlie's men managed to make it to Appalachia and hide the hell out--and a fair number of folks of Celtic descent DID cross the Alleghenies illegally before 1776 in part to hide the hell out in the mountains).

A goodly chunk had been here for...well...since the Bering land bridge sunk...and a good portion of those hid the hell out in Appalachia or otherwise passed themselves off as "Black Irish" when the American government (and especially the government of Georgia) decided they REALLY wanted the gold in Dahlonega.  (This was, of course, after those ancestors had become thoroughly Westernised enough that even Europeans had to acknowledge that their nation and about four others were "civilised".)

And, the Melungeon-descended side of the family I do have a number of relatives from around 1850 or so that have names that STRONGLY imply some variety of African-American ancestry (combined with a very stereotypical Melungeon last name)...seeing as the African-American part of the Melungeon stew consisted of either freedmen de jure or folks who freed themselves by running the hell away from the slavemasters and hiding the hell out in least with those ancestors, I have a rather strong suspicion that they did not exactly come to the US voluntarily.

(Hell, it's even entirely possible the Irish part of the ancestry didn't come voluntarily, either; Irish were being used quite a bit as indentured servants, and Georgia was actually used in the Colonial period as a sort of proto-Australia prison colony.  There's actually surprisingly little documentation of Irish and Scottish migration to the US before the Big Migration with the potato famine.)

So in short:  One branch of my ancestry came over (a fark of a long time ago) because the mammoth hunting was apparently damn good around here, one branch came over shipped rather involuntarily on a boat as human cargo meant as the ultimate form of low-cost labour, and...the third, we're still not 100% sure, but it's an even chance that they either came here running for their lives from crazy fundamentalists or involuntarily under remarkably similar circumstances to the second branch (with just a bit more of "paying off a debt to the company store" sort of deal)...

Good think this tragedy hasn't become a soapbox for racists to feel as though they can say their insane, long-discredited beliefs in broad daylight.  Hey, you know what's fun?  Having arguments over things that were settled during my parent's and grandparent's generation.  Yeah, that crap is loads of fun.

WhippingBoy: Im confused about one thing: if these people were essentially refugees, how did a 19 year old kid afford a Mercedes?

The black SUV? That was carjacked from a 7-11

I don't follow sports so what is a golden glove? I looked it up and he was nowhere to be found on the Wikipedia page for the golden glove...

skullkrusher: Cream of Meat: Arthur Jumbles: Alone in the Snark: Lord and Taylor is for the folks who think they're too posh to buy their clothes from Target, but don't have enough dough to shop at the really upscale chains like Saks.

Aspirational shoplifting FTW!

/Real Peopletm shop at Marshall's anyway
//No, you can't have a Wal-Mart in Beantown. Not yours.

What is the department store hierarchy? I'm assuming that K-Mart is at the bottom, followed by Walmart, Meijer, and Target. I suspect Sam's Club and Costco are next but afterwards I'm at a loss. Sears?

Bergdorf Goodman
Neiman Marcus
Saks 5th
Lord & Taylor

My quick ranking....sure I'm missing a lot

not bad. Maybe flip Nordstrom and Bloomingdale's but otherwise purty good, imo

I shop at Thrift Stores.
