Certainly the ring of invisibility harkens back to Plato. But the One ring to rule all is not in the Republic. I think that's what Xythero is getting at.

Wow, it's almost like these archetypal stories get told over and over, changing only slightly as they move between cultures and through time.

It's not really the same story. The only similarities are that the ring is stolen and makes you invisible. One involves usurping a kingdom and the other, stealing treasure from a dragon (and then later going to destroy the evil ring). Only the McGuffin is the same.

Certainly the ring of invisibility harkens back to Plato. But the One ring to rule all is not in the Republic. I think that's what Xythero is getting at.

That is correct. The Republic dealt mostly with the Silmarils.

Thanks. I must have read the original version as a child. I clearly remember being awed that Gollum was so bound to the laws of the riddle game that he would voluntarily hand over his most special thing. I remember reading the current version when I was older, and thinking that it sounded wrong. I passsed it off as faulty memory. Thanks for explaining the incongruity.

Now I have to ask my dad how I heard the original. Did we have an early edition?

He wrote what he wanted to write, not what he thought would sell. He was brilliant (oh to have half his imagination) but not constrained by the popular market. He wasn't, and never tried to be, a "popular writer."

He was a professor at Oxford who studied Anglo-Saxon and medieval literature and languages. He wrote a book for his sons called The Hobbit. The university was complaining that he wasn't accomplishing anything so he had it published. It did well enough that he was asked to write a sequel, which he eventually did. Most of what he wrote, including all of the appendices and the Silmarillion, was self-indulgent world-building for his own amusement. During his lifetime, people knew that. The really obtuse stuff wasn't published until after his death for various unkind motives that have been attributed to his son Christopher.

His work makes a lot more sense if you're also familiar with the manuscripts that he studied academically (egBeowulf or Sir Gawain and the Green Knight). However, the genre of fantasy would be completely unrecognizable today without his work.

The Latin word sanita, like many words in Latin; has many meanings in English. You have to use the context of the rest of the sentence to select the right meaning.

It could be ment to say: soundness of body, sanity or correctness. I'd say; in this case, the curse says; until this ring is returned, none of the Senicianus shall enjoy soundness of mind or body.

/ took Latin in high school, so I could be wrong

I'm going to take this opportunity to express my puzzlement at how much the hippies embraced Lord of the Rings. I know there's a lot in there that is, to oversimplify a bit, pro-nature and anti-technology but Tolkien has always struck me as someone who is about as far away from hippie-dom as possible. Perhaps a farker older than I can explain.

Also, while we're at it, why do people think "pipe-weed" is anything but tobacco?
